Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Damnit Tangent, your anecdote bummed me out! Thinking of a little sister being all sad because there's still more political ads is heartbreaking.
WHY WON'T ANYBODY PLEASE Think of the Children!?!?
We really should make English the official language.
That struck me as odd as well.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016No, we shouldn't. We should stay without an official language. That will A: promote multiculturalism, B: make us more adaptable as a nation, and C: be more sensitive to people who speak other languages as their primary language.
As I value Assimilation over Multiculturalism (to a degree), your qualm has fallen on deaf ears.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Counter point of A- lowering costs of printing stuff in ton of languages and B- encouraging immigrants to learn the language.
Multiculturalism surives just fine with english being the official language. My whole family is(mainly) Italian, we just speak english, but we havn't lost our roots.
Agreed, to an extent. Theres nothing wrong with having your own traditions but we shouldn't try so hard to separate ourselves. thats what leads to race issues.

I'm baaaaaaack
Exactly. There's nothing wrong with celebrating your culture or your roots, however it would be for the benefit of the nation if we encouraged the learning of the language that is held by the large majority of the country.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Right. I remember something that happened a few years ago where a famous cheesessteak place in philly put up signs that "you must order in english", and all these "latino rights" groups came out of the wood work attacking him saying his family were immigrants too, ect. The point is, this country doesnt completely change for you. You come here to join the nation and it's community. We're not saying you cant have your traditions, we encourage it if anything. but you need to learn our language.
I'm baaaaaaackEven deaf mutes?
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoWe don't need an official language. And at this point insisting that it be English is spitting in several people's faces. Like say, the Cherokee, who were loooooooooooong before any English speaking person. And to insist on it right now is ridiculous. It's already the lingua franca, and it's taught in every single school in the country. English has the overwhelming advantage.
We don't need to put it in a fucking law, that's just being spiteful as far as I can see.
I'm sure the guy you're complaining about also has ads in English for your delicate ears.
And this isn't even getting into Puerto Rico, which is prominently Spanish speaking and may at some point be a state.
The official language of a country is one which defines what language the law is written in. We already de-facto have that. Any law which tries to get passed in a different language is likely to be shot down.
Passing a law to make English the official language is like engraving your house key to say "THIS IS MY KEY PLEASE DO NOT STEAL."
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryIm not complaing that he doesnt, i'm just annoyed he doesnt at least have subtitles in english.
I'm baaaaaaack
If they can write in English, then they'll be fine.
We'll then I'm a very spiteful person for wanting it.
But you have point on Puerto Rico, they'll need to be excluded.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Tangent: Are you sure it's your sister that's watching My Little Pony and not...you?
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.Piece on NPR today that attributed Romney's bump after the debate to how ten years of like American Idol have conditioned Americans into critiquing performances much more heavily on style over substance.
Glen Ford argues that Obama is the "more effective of the two evils".
It's a very long interview, but I think it's a good critique of Obama and his impact on the American Left.
Evangelist Billy Graham all but endorses Mitt Romney.
I counter your rambling man with a rambling man of my own!
Hey, there is nothing wrong with ponies!
...or so I've heard.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I don't like that reverend Graham is making a direct political comment to the news, or the news trying to get such a comment out of him.
For evangelists, it's not supposed to be about what the government is, who you elect. It's fulfilling your duty in whatever government that is erected, whoever is elected. Who you actually vote for should be left to individuals.
Graham was a close spiritual adviser to both Ike and Nixon.
His past, connections to the White House, and role in The Civil Rights Movement makes him as much of a politician as it does an Evangelist
Kinda like Jesse Jackson or MLK.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Hmm. Still, I don't think such an adviser should limit oneself to just one political party.
On Obama going to The Daily Show.
Jon Stewart sure as hell better question him on Campaign Finance Reform and the Grand Bargain!
Arab Spring, dead terrorists, dead dictators, 2012! The new decade is hectic!
At this point, I'm not sure anyone fully gets what the f*ck the "Grand Bargain" is anymore.
Not even the president.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Glen Ford, 2016! :D Seriously, though, I'm loving this guy! I agree with him in so many ways! :D :D :D

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Stewart will lob slowballs about how obstructionistic republicans have been to the president.
he didn't even have english subtitles. It'd be nice to know more than every third word he's saying.
