Souls are a philosophical concept and not a scientific one. Perhaps it would be more useful to define "consciousness", and thereby debate how it is that an animal such as a human can be self-aware enough to conceive of the notion of a soul in the first place.
The OP excluded the "we don't have souls" argument, but it's hard to have a meaningful discussion about a completely abstract, intangible concept. Reminds me of the "Is God good" thread next door.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And Sikhism is apparently part of the "Souls are part of God" set of theories on where they come from. Oooh. I really should read up on that thing more...
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahLet take it this way, humans could advance beyond flat earth by refining knowledge gained through better observation. During flat earth period, flat earth made sense from the observation available. None of the greater interaction is observable. For souls, humans are stuck in the equivalent of flat earth, unable at all to see the greater picture that shows the interaction of souls with the body.
If a chicken crosses the road and nobody else is around to see it, does the road move beneath the chicken instead?De Marquis put it brilliantly.
My name is Cu Chulainn. Beside the raging sea I am left to moan. Sorrow I am, for I brought down my only son.Thanks. It's called "introspective data". Not convincing to anyone but the person who experiences it (but to that person, it's very convincing). Introspective data is used to allow people to report their own subjective experiences. It's not the laws of physics playing with us, it's just that, short of telepathy, there is no other way to explore internal perceptions.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."The souls that the denizens of this universe use are actually created in soul factory sweatshops in other universes, where the workers receive little to no pay and work for hours with no benefits or union rights.
You should all feel bad for having souls.
Would you kindly click my dragons? We dont have souls.
"Man can believe the impossible, but can never believe the improbable.” - Oscar WildeUntil fair trade souls become feasible, I am happy to remain soulless.
Would you kindly click my dragons?I'd get rid of my soul if I could. I could overcome and escape the whole of reality then.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahMy soul was getting a little obsolete, so I sold it to a certain Lou Siffer. He's a big collector of those sorts of things.
What a nerd.
Would you kindly click my dragons? This remainds me of the movie "We are thou brother"
"Ulysses Everett Mc Gill: What'd the devil give you for your soul, Tommy?
Tommy Johnson: Well, he taught me to play this here guitar real good.
Delmar O'Donnell: Oh son, for that you sold your everlasting soul?
Tommy Johnson: Well, I wasn't usin' it. "

"Man can believe the impossible, but can never believe the improbable.” - Oscar WildeI think I know that guy. Once traded my soul to gain the ultimate powers of darkness. Then I kicked him in the nuts and ran off with his soul collection.
Maybe I should try selling them on ebay for cash?

"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterI think ebay's TACOS say you can't.

This.
Yet here we are, on page 4.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."I think the point is that the soul is such a personal and subjective idea that anyone can define and interpret it however they wish, and there is simply no way to prove or refute anything.
Agreed.
That said, the OP didnt ask us to resolve anything among ourselves, just to express our beliefs.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."I do wish it stayed as just that, but hey I can't have everything I want now can I?!
-waits for next debate to spark up-
I know you're coming...
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahYes I did want that, but you can't always get want you want.
But if you try sometimes...
You get what you need.
