Via penguin hats. Since Kenzan is confirmed to be dead, that makes him a candidate to be Princess of the Crystal, going off the stuff that happened in relation to Mario and Sahei Natsume. This would mean that POTC is after the diary so that she can destroy it, allowing Sanetoshi to win and put fate back on track.

For the Takakura children to win a happy ending, they will have to give the complete diary to Ringo, not POTC, possibly resulting in Ringo making a Heroic Sacrifice for the sake of Himari and Kanba.

As for Ringo and Tabuki, don't consider them dead yet. They are probably the only people who know where half of Momoka's diary in, so they still have an important role to play. Though Yuri may well have carried the diary on her and got it stolen as a result, considering how well Masako researches everything.

And yeah. Use spoiler tags in case somebody hasn't watched episode 21 yet.

Kanba isn't dead, as Penguin #1 hasn't faded. The only character that is confirmed to be dead is Himari (again), with Tabuki in a critical condition and most likely dead. Oh, and those Red Shirts that Kan killed off in the latest Kiga terrorist attacks too. They make up most of the deaths.

Looks like we will learn about Shouma's origins and Pingroup's role in the story in the next episode, judging from that flashback after the ED song.

Okay, wow. Just signed up(and got caught up) for this one topic. I soooo wish I watched this when it was starting, but better late than never. Man, I loved Utena, and I thought nothing would match it in terms of its weirdness factor. Ikuhara, I was wrong to doubt you, and I apologize.

I also love the little touches that show you what the inner workings of the man called Ikuhara look like.(That is, always FABULOUS MAX)

Anyway, a few questions/theories/troll spots:

1. Were any of the Triple H singers in SKU? I swear their voice or style sounds similar. Maybe the live theatre plays? It's seriously bugging me out.

2. So, is the general consensus that Sanetoshi is basically the lovechild of Akio and Mikage?(And let's be real here, you've got Ikuhara and Lily Hoshino here, so I don't think them having a child would be out of the question) I mean, he's a 'Ghost', skilled mindrapist, and trying to fulfill a dream to possibly revolutionize the world.

3. In episode 13, how many of you were kind of hoping that Sanetoshi met the girl in '97(or is it '98) instead of '95? I know I was(kind of).

4. Penguindrum. That thing was the biggest mystery in the first eps, before being cast aside for awesome character development. As the show reaches its final hours, I'm wondering if it is something intangible, like love or happiness or somesuch, or if it's a person. My guess is that if it's a person, it'll probably be Shouma, if for nothing other than the fact that he was able to break someone out of the child broiler*.

5. Masako. She seriously lived up to her expy in the last ep. From being plain badass and sacrificing basically everything for her love.

6. Alright, I'm gonna call it. SKU had Miki's stopwatch as the answer to everything in its universe. In this universe, Himari and Masako(to a lesser extent)'s foreheads are the answer and greatest mystery of the universe. That thing is way to shiny to be real.

7. Momoka is Utena. Pink hair, always helps those in need, has the power to change or revolutionize fate, disappeared. She IS Utena. Just a bit younger maybe.(Utena was ~14 in '97 and Momoka was like, ~8?)

8. In the opening credits, there's a mention of something like イクニチャウダー(ikunichowder). Is this something Ikuhara is a part of?

I cannot wait to see how this finally plays out. Utena has always been my number one, but she might be feeling the heat from her younger sister. Ikuhara is seriously good at what he does. Even if it takes him more than a decade to do it.

I also love the direction he's going in. Utena was definitely more about adolescence, finding yourself, and growing up. This seems to be more about what family means, getting over the past, and escaping the curses of your forefathers. In addition to finding and accepting yourself. Does Ikuhara like the whole

No discussion of the new episode? Huh. Allow me to take this chance to try and summarize the main plot — I'd like to know if I've forgotten something or if we disagree on some interpretations.

So Momoka tried to shunt Sanetoshi and his evil organization out of existence with her magic diary in 1995, but apparently Sanetoshi had also picked up some magic while he was still alive as he managed to interrupt Momoka's spell with a counter-curse, killing them both and splitting their souls in half (but letting the attacks go off without a hitch.) Sanetoshi can manifest as the two halves of his soul (the black bunnies) have already found each other, but Momoka's soul-halves (the two penguin hats) remain apart. Sanetoshi's been cleverly playing the families of the two hat-bearers against each other so that things would stay that way, and with Momoka's diary burned he's now pretty much free to relive his fantasy of destroying the world through Kamba.

The above would suggest that the Penguindrum is in fact the other penguin hat, if not for the Princess of the Crystal's comment that the Penguindrum is Kamba's... something. Other things I'm not clear on include how Momoka got the magic diary, why it took the penguin hats some fifteen years after the incident to manifest and if it was the same for the black bunnies, wth is the Child Broiler, and what that Mary Had A Little Lamb story had to do with anything. The Takakura parents' ghosts are probably either just Kamba's delusion or more Sanetoshi magic. But I suppose we'll find out NEXT EPISODE.

In case you had forgotten, Mario happens to be Kanba's biological little sibling - and the bearer of the other hat. That said, I'm not sure I agree with that theory, I am starting to wonder if it might be Shouma who is the Penguindrum, unbeknownst to him. It explain why they can't talk about it with him around, and also the "I have magic" stuff when he was a kid.

Also, Ringo is made of solid gold awesome, I was in tears for her when she was in the fire, and there seems to have been some Ship Tease flung all around.

...And I don't know when I'll be able to see the last episode, since I'm going to my mother's place for Christmas!

I'm also thinking Shouma is the penguindrum, or at least part of it. I think Shouma and Kanba's curse *is* the penguindrum and when they can overcome that, that will unlock the secret, revolutionize the world, break the eggs-err box, etc I'm wondering if the reason hat!Momoka went to both of the youngest of the families is because they were the ones who would suffer the brunt of the curse, i.e. Himari's sickness and Mario's possession.

As an aside, if the op sequence plays during the next episode, I will NOT acknowledge that as the finale. All of the good final episodes of shows I've seen skip the op and have a custom ed*

. The finale also needs to be done by the ep. 9 team.

Worst fear: The Togainu no Chi team for its final episode does the animation.

Mario and his hat are really the biggest loose end, here. And there's also the issue of the total disconnect between hat-possessed!Himari and Momoka, characterization-wise. Though the Bunnies don't really have the same personality as Sanetoshi either, so.

You do realize the there are two more episodes left in this show, right?

I'm pretty sure Utena used the standard OP for its finale. Admittedly, it did have a custom ED.

Another thing which I find interesting is that in the intermission animation, there appears to be one more stop after the one which marks the final episode. DVD-exclusive true ending, anyone? Or maybe Adolescence of Penguindrum?

I can't even begin to imagine what kind of fuckness would be in an Adolescence of Penguindrum.

Easy, Himari turns into a train which Kanba and Shouma ride. It then runs down Sanetoshi who explodes into a billion apples after train!Himari turns back into Himari embracing a naked Kanba and Shouma. And the radio play is done by Double-H.

Shiori's part will be played by hat!Mario. (Why wasn't I in the show!? WHY!WHY!WHY!WHY!*crash*)

Really? I thought the last ep. of Utena just had the title slide and then a shift into the action at hand.

Well, it's been a while (over a year) since I watched it, so minor (for me) details don't really stick, even if they do enhance the quality of the final episode.

...what if Ikuhara decides to go with the Blood C and Steins;Gate flow and make the real actual (questionable) solution end up in a movie?

Let's see if the final will be a Mind Screwdriver or if we have to do taht part ourselves. ..knowing Ikuhara, it's the latter. Knowing Ikuhara I am sure the ending will solve NOTHING. But will be AWESOME nevertheless. I'd be happy to be wrong.

...it's difficult to decide on one pairing. Shouma is a Launcher of a Thousand Ships as of lately, no? ...and I really want to ship him with EVERYONE....

I feel like people have overtalked the mind fuckery in this show; which is to say there barely is any other than its throwing you headfirst into its premise in the first episode. It's actually quite straightforward, it just teases out its information very skillfully; even the visual metaphors and symbolism are far more obvious than Utena's, which is hardly a bad thing.
