Japanese Scientists Build Pop Star; Fans Devastated:

what are you doing
Honestly, that's like saying we should stop playing the vidya because it's not curing AI Ds.

Crowded trains are a favourite location for groping and a 2001 survey conducted in two Tokyo high schools revealed that more than 70% of students had been groped while travelling on them.

(Wikipedia)

That's not an urban legend, mister, that's fact.

Also, I that's what they're called. I thought it started with a c.

Anyway, so, yes, in terms of weirdness factor, this is totally unsurprising.

I don't understand this weird kind of stereotyping. You can make a very convincing case that Japanese culture is pretty fucked up, but why immediately default to train molesters? It's not like that's a socially acceptable thing to do over there you realize? If you're going for a critique go for things that are considered socially acceptable (for instance, the rather bizarre view the Japanese have on homosexuality).

The train thing isn't an example of direct problems of the culture, it's an example of the indirect effects of its fucked-up-titude.

Japanese culture is notoriously misogynist and notoriously sexually repressed. The train bullshit is one result.

I'd agree with the misogyny (although that has gotten *somewhat* better in recent years, somewhat) and repression, but I'm just saying that it's strange to go right for the thing with the highest shock value, in my opinion.

Watchmen of the Apocalypse
Folks what does this have to do with the Japanese building a pop star?
"Who watches the watchmen?"

It happened to be the most recent thing that was brought to my attention as to modern Japanese weirdness.

As a side note, not every "weird thing about Japan" article you read is true. You know that thing about used panties being sold in vending machines? Never happened.

So just be aware that not everything people say happens in Japan actually happens there.

Yes, yes, don't believe everything you hear.

Though I've honestly never heard of that. 0_o

Anyhow, this whole debacle honestly doesn't surprise me at all. What comes of it... well, we'll see.

It was, I guess what you could call a meme in the strictest sense of the word, for awhile. "Hey did you know that Japan is freakin' weird? They even" etc. etc.

Anyway, a lot of Japan's weirdness stems from its many subcultures, and I'm not even talking otakus here. Male Escorts and yankiis are some of the strangest groups of people I have ever come across. Also those truckers who pimp their rigs out in ridiculous....I don't even know what you'd call it. But I forget the name of that particular subculture.

Chrome. Decals. Etc.

This is most decidedly not a uniquely Japanese phenomenon, I'll tell you that.

Noooo sir, that is not what I mean at all.

There's a Cracked article on them, I'll dig it up.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd, this thread not only was necro'd to continue a derail about a movie, but then it derailed from that derail it to another derail, and from there to yet another derail.

Locking.
