We received a holler about this thread; how much work is still needing to be done on it?

I don't recall hollering this, but I think nothing short of a new TRS would help, considering that we don't really agree on a definition.

[up] Agreed. There's clearly no consensus here. Close it.

Why is this still open? There's clearly no consensus here to do anything, as evidenced by the thread going stale in October. Can someone please archive it? I've hollered it twice and don't want to do it a third time lest I piss someone off.

I think the moderators are still thinking this has a chance. Although a confirming post would be nice.

[up]It's had five months of inactivity. How much more of a chance does it need?

There's a LOT of "___ vs. ___" entries. Many of those are about many things besides just the titular fight/rivalry. Should we start purging those and add a note in the description saying not to add them?
58 SeptimusHeap27th Feb 2013 06:08:15 AM from Zurich, Switzerland , Relationship Status: Mu
Yes.

I wonder if we need to make this YMMV. The way it is, it certainly looks as if there is no way to tell blatantly obvious without the "obvious" or "blatant" being subjective.

This is very quickly devolving into "We should do something." "Should we do something?" "We should do something." "Should we do something?"

I say close the thread. It's been open way too long, and no one's ever going to arrive at a consensus.

Is this thread in Trope Repair Shop, or in Projects: Short Term?

The forum puts this thread in Projects: Short Term, but the trope page for Exactly What It Says on the Tin has a button "Trope Repair Shop Discussion" that links to this thread.

It was moved from Repair Shop to Special Efforts then to Projects.
Seeking for Light
To expand, it has the Trope Repair Shop (TRS) button because it was originally in TRS. Then the thread was moved to the old version of the Projects forums, Special Efforts. When Special Efforts was split into the two Projects forums, this thread was shifted into Projects: Short Term. So it is currently in Projects: Short Term.

This is Rain. Isn't she pretty? :)
Apologies for nercoing but considering everything, I believe a rename is a good idea.

"Blunt Title" was suggested earlier, and I think that's appropriate.
I'm not LGBT. I just think Rain's really cool.

Apologies if my humor gets too painful.

We do not do renames in Projects (barring a few mod- or admin-mandated exceptions).

I posted here because renaming the trope was suggested earlier.

I may make another thread in TRS when it clears up.

Considering that this trope has more than 22000 inbounds, it won't get a rename anywhere soon I am afraid.

I really think we should revisit the idea of renaming this trope to something more understandable. Unusually Straightforward Title, perhaps. That would be less likely to be misunderstood. There are so many borderline examples that it's difficult to clean them up. I have this page on my watchlist so I can zap any non-examples as they come, but it's still a mess. A rename that makes it more clear what the trope is would help.

The only problem is...
Main/ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin found in: 11471 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2012 this article has brought 27,661 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

That's some impressive usage stats.

Even so, it's still broken and needs some kind of cleanup.

Yes, it needs to be cleaned up. Both the examples on the page and the wicks need to be cleaned up. That's what this thread is for — organizing the clean-up. Not debating whether it needs to be changed. That's TRS.

In that case, I think we need a good standard for how exactly we should clean it up. I'd deleted a number of entries but some are so borderline that I'm not quite sure. A name change would probably help.

"The whole premise or plot is right there in the title." That's what it is. Anything that doesn't meet that criteria isn't a straight example. A subversion would be a title that seems to completely cover the entire plot or premise but doesn't — most often because the title refers to something that's only a minor sidelight (or isn't even present at all).

So most <Actor or character name> titles (like Phineas and Ferb or The Bob Newhart show) aren't; they don't tell you the premise or the plot, they simply tell you the star or the main character's name.

It's still a widely misunderstood trope, and it's a disaster to keep cleaning up. When I get time I'll take a look through it again. I'd appreciate some extra help with this, as I do come across examples that I'm not sure of, and I don't want to err too much on the side of tossing too much out.

Another point: the super-long Victorian-style names should be on In Which a Trope Is Described; it's a more specific subtrope, and examples of a subtrope should be on that page, not the supertrope's page.

Also, we can clean up the page over and over, but the bad wicks need to be removed. They're what is causing most of the further bad usage— people see it misused on a work's page, or another trope page and think that's the right way to use it.

You're right. Could I leave a message on the page telling people who followed a bad wick to please remove it? It would have to be phrased very specifically, and I'm not sure exactly how to phrase it.
