""We brought some base building back with Retribution," Mc Dermott continued. "With DOW 3, because it's going to be a new version, we're looking at the game as a whole, and we're really upping the intensity. "

What does that even mean?

Also it sounds like they are gonna make it where you choose your army before hand or some sort, like the tabletop game.

Mite B Cool.

I just want Dark Crusade's campaign back, is that too much to ask!?

[up]But Dark Crusade's campaign was a bunch of storyless skirmishes interspaced with commanders throwing out one liners at each other. Plus that Warp-damned Tau Stronghold...

Maybe Dark Crusade's risk map could be an alternate mode apart from a persistent campaign?

All of the commander crossover elements were great though. Sure there wasn't as much "story" but it was amusing to see how each faction handled other characters and objectives (Like the Necron bomb)

I was really really excited about Retribution's campaign...until I found out they're all the same only with different characters, dialogue, and minor variants.

I dont like doing the same level over and over.

But that's exactly what Dark Crusade's campaign is! Retribution's campaigns are every bit as different as Dark Crusade's... no, more so, because there's a lot more dialog and a greater variety in abilities and wargear.

Really, for the factions to make sense, the game should probably offer both kinds of campaigns. The Orks, Tyranids and Imperial Guard (with SM support) would be fighting to take and hold territories on a risk-style map, while factions like Eldar and Space Marines would be more interested in carrying out specific objectives amid the fighting. Not sure about CSM in this scheme...

[up][up]I seem to remember doing the same level over and over because my territory kept getting attacked.

Well let me put it this way.. They were normally like regular RTS maps, like skirmish mode, kind of.

It allowed for different options other than the same "Follow this linear path until you reach your destination"

Maybe I'm just not very good at RTSes , but every DOW1 map for me boiled down to "build the army that works, roll forth and crush the other player." The strict limits on most of the interesting unit types ensured that my army looked pretty much the same from map to map, even though I had to go through all of the irritating busywork of throwing up a base, churning it out and researching it up in every single map.

Retribution alleviates this somewhat by giving you the ability to go in with different equipment and limiting your resources so that you have to pick and choose what units you build. Also, to me at least, the various factions felt significantly different; swamping a map in scrambling bodies as the Tyranids, stomping steadily through as the Space Marines or darting around and flinging out volleys of mind lightning as the Eldar were all very different experiences.

DOW3 looks like it's going to do better than either, if this customization thing works out.

I entirely agree with Duranzo. DOW 1 singleplayer was just, to me "make the units that work, attack-move, mico a bit". DOW 2 requires you to use tactics and take many more things into consideration, along with every race requireing different strategies to be effective. Oh, and don't even get me started on multi. DOW 2 is miles ahead of DOW 1's imbalances.

DOW 2 units were too small for my opinion. The nids didn't feel like The Swarm and the orks didn't feel like the green tide.

I think if they can mix 1 and 2 (which sounds like they are doing) we might have what we need.

Also remove the retreat feature, I couldn't stand that. It made multiplayer into a game of grab ass. Especially with bots. No one fought, they just run around capturing points.

http://gannadene.deviantart.com/art/Guide-to-Dawn-of-War-2-142774898 sums it up pretty good. Dawn of Resource 2 is the perfect name. (Dammit how do you hot link)

I haven't experienced that effect with the retreat feature. My opponents mostly stand and fight, only retreating if I'm completely rolling them over. Also, as a Techmarine-and-sometimes-Guard player, I tend to dig in around victory points anyway.

The AI in the original Dawn of War is actually kind of annoying about that; they'll send a unit to attack and then immediately take off running, only to resume shooting if I stop chasing them. I assume humans wouldn't do that, though, since they'd want a fight as much as I do.

[up][up]It is an annoying feature of the AI, yes.

However in the rare case a player tries it, there is an extremely easy way to force a confrontation: Follow him and attack his Power Node. If he doesn't engage you for some reason, congratulations, you just won the match. Mind you, good players will usually ninja-cap like crazy but it is done in addition to the normal battle, not instead of it.

If people beat you by not fighting you, you are doing something very, very wrong. It is absurdly easy to take map control if they refuse to fight you. Drak pretty much nailed it.

I'd regard it safe to say no one but Relic has any idea right now.

I'm pretty sure the property got carried over with them going to Sega for their new publisher, but who knows how it affected their priorities.
