Well, I don't know if Wii Remotes on their side are multiplayer only, but if they're not, I'd use it for NSMBU.

Actually, in regards to 3D Mario games controlling better with a stick, I've found out quite to my surprise that Super Mario 64 controls amazingly well (or at least much better than you would expect) with the directional keypad on a computer. The camera usually always moves in a way that makes going to any direction feasible with just eight directions (the four keys and the inbetweens). Of course there are always the tough passages (the tinny tiny bridges like the one to the Wiggler's red coins in Tiny-Huge Island) which are made even more tough by the fact that keyboards usually don't feature different levels of pressure (which means you're always running no matter what), but on the whole it still is very playable. Might also be because I know the game inside and out, but that's another story.

[up]I didn't mind the camera in open areas, which comprise most of the game. It's just the narrow areas that it gets annoying.

I catch your drift. Especially since when I play it on my laptop I don't have the camera controls, and some narrow ledges and platforms simply seem to not register whatsoever in the automatic camera placement.

However I couldn't do the same with Mario Sunshine, seeing I'm using the C-stick almost as much as the analog when I'm playing. Somehow the camera controls are so smooth I just find myself wanting to have borderline cinematic control over the camera placement. Which is partly the reason why I think Sunshine is probably the best 3D platformer in terms of control : it just feels right.

[up]Well, Sunshine had even more open areas than 64, with no real narrow areas that I could remember. Everyone says Sunshine's camera was also bad, but the game seemed to have been designed around it very well.

Yeah I'm pretty much alone on that. Probably because I love having total control of the camera, and Sunshine achieved that perfectly. Which is why returning to the limited camera angles of Galaxy (and even more in Galaxy 2) really felt like a step back for me. Even though I'm aware most of the times they don't want you to move the camera is that they don't want you to see certain things, and that's in the line of the stricter linearity of both of these.

That's precisely what I love about 64 and Sunshine, is that they aren't thinly veiled 2D Mario games, but their own thing. But again, I'm apparently alone on preferring 64 and Sunshine over any given 2D Mario so I guess Nintendo is just moving along with what people prefer, since Sunshine has received an almost universal lukewarm to unfavorable reception.

[up]You aren't alone; the 3D platformers are my favourite Mario platformers, and they never disappoint.smile

According to a marketing test Nintendo did, they showed people Mario running around in a 2D environment, and a 3D environment. Mario running around in a 2D environment was perceived to be "cool", while the 3D environment was perceived to be "kiddy".

So yeah, mainstream loves 2D Mario, and it's what makes Nintendo cash. The 3D games are also considered to be too complex by the mainstream, as opposed to the 2D games simple gameplay.

I'm starting to think that "mainstream" means "casual gamers" here.

I know about a friend of mine, and while she can do 2D Mario stuff, she can't play 3D Mario, or else she gets dizzy, so I guess that's another thing in the favor of 2D Mario I suppose.

[up]People who tend to have motion sickness, or suffer from epileptic fits/seizures tend to handle 3D games less well due to having to follow the character, whereas 2D games usually have the character centered in the middle of the screen.

@Magcargo Man: I've heard that even Japan has a preference for 2D Mario over 3D Mario. It's probably because the first few 3D Mario games were very open-ended, and the Japanese seem to prefer a sense of direction to openness.

I don't like this debate. Mario is Mario, and every game with him is awesome*

And even in the west, 2D Mario still tends to be more popular.

[up]Is it because of the perceived "complexity" of the 3D Mario games that they've actively been making them more linear?

[up][up] It is, something like that. 3D Land is the best selling 3D Mario in Japan after all.

[up]At least their efforts are literally paying off, but I do want them to make an open Mario game again. I liked the first two 3D Mario games more than every other one because of their openness.

So, this is news to me. Mario Galaxy 2 has literal hell beasts. I just heard about this on Did you know gaming.
