A friend of mine made a Tumblr account where he posts some closed-room murders. He made the first closed-room murder challenge about a year ago, and up to this day, no one has solved it, and now he's posted a second one. So I'm posting the challenges here so you guys can also have a go at it.

The rules:

  • Standard Umineko rules: Red truth means that it's a subjective truth — it's absolutely true, but it's open to interpretations. Theories made in blue must be countered by the red truth. You may ask for confirmation in red, but the Game Master has the right to deny the confirmation. On the ask box, Bold text is red truth and italic text is blue text.
  • Knox Rules and Van Dine rules apply to the locked rooms unless stated otherwise.
  • Post your final theories on the ask box. You may post anonymously or log on.
  • You may polish your theories here. Some red truth has already been given earlier, so I might be able to refute some of the weaker arguments.

The first puzzle: Here.

Suppose that you are a guest at a party. Now, since the party is a two-day event, you are provided with a room, as with all the other guests, such that each guest has their own room.

After dinner, all of the guests (including you) retreat to their respective rooms for the evening. Night passes without incident- you all have a good night’s rest, and awaken for breakfast. However, as you all gather in the dining hall, you notice two things- one, that there is an ornate chest underneath the table, and two, that one of the guests is missing- stuck in his own room, you think. You and a select few of the other guests head to the missing man’s room at once and loudly bang on the locked door, in an effort to wake him up.

As you turn your back on the room, you suddenly hear a loud bang, and sense gunpowder in the air- this was a gunshot! Breaking down the door, you see the missing man lying dead on the bed clutching a key, and no one else inside the room.

The key, as you later discover, unlocks the box in the dining hall. As you might have guessed, the box contains a single revolver with five bullets in the cylinder- the ballistic markings indicate that the bullet lodged in the victim’s brain came from this very gun.

The guests in the dining hall all swear that the box was not touched at all for the entire duration that you and the others went to investigate. I can guarantee this.

Will you attend to my challenge, or will you merely resign yourself to the unflinching reality of magic?

The second puzzle: Here.

As you regroup and discuss the case of the vanishing gun, you notice that yet another guest had gone missing. You run and check the guest’s room- it is locked. You are overcome with fear and concern for the man’s well-being as you break down the door once more.

Your fears have been validated. The guest was killed.

Not only was he decapitated, but his guts were torn out sometime after death. As with the previous crime, the door was found locked, and upon opening it, nothing but the corpse remains inside (furniture notwithstanding).

Looking through the remains of the victim- you see a key covered in his own gastric juices. I can guarantee that the key had already been ingested by the victim before he was decapitated. Furthermore, I can guarantee that only one key to the room exists- there are no doubles/duplicates, not even a master key.

I shouldn’t have to mention that decapitation counts as a form of instant death, but I will anyway, for the purposes of clarification.
