Wasn't sure what to actually put as the title, but I was wondering why people want certain things to die?

I've been hearing it more and more often recently with people saying the U.S is going to die because X happened.

Is it because they are people who hate the U.S. and want other people to hate it also?

  • Note: This topic can be used as a discussion on people who say "X is going to die because of Y" and not just about the U.S.

People who hate something want to be able to say "I told you so.", and get prepared for it. For others (most, I'd say), it's just wishfull thinking.

Eh, people have a flair for the dramatic and want to see big things like the US or the UN collapse in a glorious whirl and boom of color and such. In reality, most countries continue to exist and go through cycles until someone invades and stomps the crap out of the culture.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Wishful thinking, if a tad barbaric.

Or annoyance at the perceived wishful thinking/blind faith/arrogance of people who think X won't eventually die.

X will eventually die is so obvious, the other side must speak first for you to mention it.

I don't know if the other side typically speaks first when the X in question is the U.S., but they certainly do when it comes to the Xes that concern me.

Thought this would be about the death of God or of the author, although I suppose the same points apply. If you're an atheist you don't think there's a God, so you obviously would say that the concept is dead or religious belief is dead, which is what I think the metaphor means.

Nothing human lasts for ever, so it's a safe bet that at some point the US will be superceded or come to an end in some way. I don't think there's any danger of that happening any time soon though.

If there is anything people want to be when they grow up, is to become that guy who gets to say, "I TOLD YOU SO!" It's a big risk, like preaching the rapture, but the rewards of being right are 1,000,000x more satisfying than just going about your business and actually dealing with problems.

It's nothing more than that.

Might be out of malice or spite.

...could be out of genuine concern, though.
