Well they still haven't done a FPS that does melee combat well yet...the best they got to a melee FPS is Red Steel 2...so once people get tired of realistic military shooters with crazy life regeneration, they could try to make a melee oriented FPS based off medieval settings?

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Yeah but games like that technically wouldn't be First Person Shooters. They'd be First Person Slashers.

Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree. The advantage of the genre is its immersiveness due to the perspective (which gives the genre itself its name). I think I've seen few, if not any other genre, still so strong almost 20 years its popularization (from Doom onwards). Call of Duty is going for oversaturation but ultimately I doubt the genre as a whole will be affected.
^^Well.....you could always throw your sword as an attack to keep the "shooting" in First Person Shooting......just remember to pick it back up.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Of course, the First Person part will remain strong but the Shooter part...I just have to call that into question...

Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.I find the perspective more claustrophobic than "immersive".
God, FPS fans, you'll have to forgive me, but I could use being surrounded by your games less. So I'd kind of like this 'reign' to end. Heck, I kind of wish it never happened to begin with.
Genkidama for Japan, even if you don't have money, you can help![1]Question is, what would rise up to take it's place among the mainstream gamer's fare of choice?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I love this kind of threads. They give the impression some people actually believe in wishful thinking.
As long as 12-year-olds love pwning n00bs and shouting profanities in their headsets, FPSs are going to rule the market.
It's a shame that all video game franchises haven't been adapted into FP Ses yet — they really are the most effective way to train people to be mass killers currently available on the commercial market.
Looking forward to FPS version of Ultima, Leisure Suit Larry, and King's Quest.
Except [condescending response follows]. Because [sarcasm here]. You do understand [snark], right? POTHOLE TO SARCASM MODEI can't tell that if was sarcasm or not. I hope it was because that is literally one of the most ludicrously inaccurate statements I've heard in a while.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.... That was pretty far into the 'blatant joke' category.

FWIW: I'm 99.999999999999% certain that it was a joke
Well if you guys know of a better way to brainwash mass shooters I am certainly all ears.
Except [condescending response follows]. Because [sarcasm here]. You do understand [snark], right? POTHOLE TO SARCASM MODEPolitical radicalism. Poverty. Inadequate mental treatment. There's three.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I don't see military realism shooters going away for the same reason I don't see Tom Clancy's popularity ever going away - there's will always be a large amount of people who prefer 'realistic' fiction media that wouldn't touch fantastical media with a ten foot pole. We'll probably see more rpg influences a la Team Fortress and Deus Ex, though, as people become used to standard mechanics and demand additional depth. And lots and lots of microtransaction vanity items.
Melee does not work very well in first person pov, for a variety of reasons. Of course, you can always do first person for shooting and then switch to third for melee, which some Star Wars games have done fairly well.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Tropers, you sadden me.

Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!Also: DegrootKeep
I have a message from another time...Lets put it this way: There's been genre over saturation before: Mascot games, (gory for gore's sake) fighting games, beat em ups etc. A great many of them are Deader Than Disco to many, especially the likes of game magazines and critics. the flavor of the generation this time is first person shooters. Their time will come as well.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.The problem is that technology favored this change (many platformers and fighting games hit the Polygon Ceiling, while those who stayed 2D were dismissed as "old" by idiots).
Current technology still favors First Person Shooters...

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Never! As soon as we get our Metroid Prime Hunters sequel the market will belong to first person shooters forever.
On a serious not, they don't dominate the market now. The best selling games are still in the vain of Mario Platform games, Party games like "Just Dance" and Sandbox games like Grand Theft Auto. Just because a lot of developers are making first person shooters doesn't mean they dominate the market if more people buy other things.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackI'm clueless as to why you have that feeling, because my post didn't even hint at either. I'm too young to be a foaming-mouth X-COM diehard, anyway.
I was just commenting on how much I like the thread's title. It's like it says, "oh boy am I tired of FPS games! Would they kindly stop getting developed now?"
They won't, because there's ongoing demand for them that doesn't seem to get any weaker, primarily from the multi-player loving front as I've pointed out. If anything, FPSs might mutate to something different (augmented reality?), and even that would take a long time to happen.

Oh sorry, I confused you with another user...I sometimes do that...
And how I feel about FPSes...I love the multiplayer of FPSes like in Team Fortress but I just feel that gritty, "realistic" FPSes are the new Mascot with Attitude. They were cool at first but now I can't help but join the group that feels they have over stayed their welcome.

Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.
It's no question that First Person Shooters are dominating the market like Platform Games back in the day...but that's just it. We all know what happen to Platformers, so seeing the inflation of Modern Day FPSes, it makes me wonder is there going to be a crash? There are only so many ways you can make them and eventually, the market might get sick of the similarity and the sales for the genre will decrease noticably.
I want to hear the tropers opinions on the subject (because it's quite clear that your analysis will be better than mine)
