First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

I am trying to think about some come backs to "too black" but all I can think of is telling the complainers to increase the brightness of the screen or stop watching Zack Snyder movies.

I find the whole thing about white fragility so funny, I can't stop thinking that the people complaining about other ethnic groups other than a specific subset of Caucasian not being the dominant group, to be nothing but the lowest common denominator in any society.

"What kid? You're feeling threatened by a black man taking a lead role? You're afraid of losing your status to those you consider beneath you? Aren't you supposed to be the Ubermensch mighty limey whitey? If you're just better than everyone else why are you afraid to begin with?"

It is the same people who keep yapping about "muh heritage" but got nothing to show for, love to bring achievements of the past they were no part of and act like they are the hottest shit under the sun because of it.

My reacion to luke cage is strange, I mean if this was diversity show but focus more in black people them I will get it, but the show pretty much advertised itself as black show or a least heavly based on black culture, is like watching a WW 2 and complain they are too much nazis.

"they wonder why we're "objectifying" Asian men."

I dont know, I have sound certain minority does some creepy behavior by using "we have not power" argument, in this case it sound weird when is a "correct" form of objectifying.

I've been streaming Luke Cage. It's awesome, and I second the idea that we need anvilicious BLM support.

Hell, I've been kind-of interested in Cage since I'm always good for superheroes, but like the MRA stink about Mad Max Fury Road being "feminist propaganda" only deepened my support of it, hearing white people complain about Cage made me start streaming it JUST to piss them off.

Speaking of music featured in Luke Cage, what do you guys think of Jidenna?

Jidenna was one of the best scenes in the show. Lots of great character moments.

I haven't finished Luke Cage yet so I haven't gotten to the part in question, but Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped is a trope for a reason. Normally I think "explicit enough to be noticed, subtle enough that the work doesn't beat you over the head with it" is the ideal middle ground for these kinds of things, but given the current political climate I think being a bit more explicit than normal isn't really an issue.

More importantly, the show's messages and execution thereof has not in any way impeded or hurt my enjoyment of the show in any way, which is what's important.

AlleyOop Since: Oct, 2010

The show definitely wasn't subtle about bringing these issues to the forefront at all. But it remained nuanced enough to avoid taking a hard stance on things, which would require oversimplifying the issues and is what leads to justified criticisms about Author Tract for sloppier polemics. Its approach was very much "we might not have easy answers for what to do about them, but hey these are some things you should be aware of".

Really, my favorite thing about Luke Cage even as a pure work of art was that it was a very "gray" cast of characters. The good characters had flaws (Pops was a womanizer and not the best father, Misty's violence and guilt), and the bad characters had positive traits (Pistol Pete was a rapist but he was genuinely kind to Cottonmouth, Scarfe believed in Misty and loved his son, Burstein believed his research would benefit man). Nothing felt like a strawman, nobody felt apotheosized or demonized.

While watching the show I felt really sorry for both Cottonmouth and Mariah.

Cottonmouth is obviously accountable for his choices but had he grown up in another environment, he might have never become a criminal and grown up to be a musician like many of the ones playing at his club. And I sincerely believe that Mariah meant it when she said she loved him, even though they had a conflicted relationship. I don't think him dying like that was what she wanted at all.

It's a real tragedy.

Anyways, I hope the response to "white fragility" doesn't become to taunt or make insulting comments about them, the way many people seem to have once the concept of fragile masculinity took off ("lol men are so fragile and insecure, hahaha!" and snide comments that essentially mock men for having emotions in the first place, which is part of how we even got here) which only increases their defensiveness. Intentionally antagonizing people you know have a problem is dickish.
And then a half-dozen posts later...

I find the whole thing about white fragility so funny, I can't stop thinking that the people complaining about other ethnic groups other than a specific subset of Caucasian not being the dominant group, to be nothing but the lowest common denominator in any society.

I accidentally spoiled myself, but Cottonmouth is such a BADASS. I'm gonna miss him when he dies.

I loved him the minute I heard everyone correcting each other about calling him "Cottonmouth" instead of his real name. Like, that name is either for a drug-lord or an assassin, a la Kill Bill. Best Open Secret ever.

His scene with the Biggie poster made me Love to Hate him because 1) awesome shot, and 2) awesome delivery. Like, I hate him for his shitty treatment of women, his employees, people who fail him, and basically everyone who isn't important or useful to him, but he's such a damn BOSS. I wouldn't say he's a Draco in Leather Pants, but he's the kind of guy you lust after from fifty or so feet away, through a closed window. Preferably bulletproof.

Speaking of minorities on the screen, my wife and I saw The Magnificent Seven 2016 yesterday afternoon. Now, I haven't seen the original, so aside from casting choices I can't say how much was different. But I did note that at the end of the movie, the three surviving are the black man, the Mexican, and the Comanche. I did wonder if that was a deliberate choice with the script or just how the casting turned out.

Some BBC presenter recently got axed in order to make room for someone that, combined with the other regulars, reflects a more modern cross section of viewers, so to speak.

And it happened 3 weeks after his son was born. Ouch.

To be fair though, it's not like "showbusiness" was any less cutthroat before this kind of shift happened. But unfortunately, it does give credence to those with that sort of "zero-sum game" logic when it comes to race issues.

It's always so comforting when people say, "Well, hey, at least you're not as bad as [even worse country]!" Gee, thanks. Now I feel better. I'm so glad to know we've passed the incredibly high bar they've set.
