I see environments quite avidly. Although I usually don't imagine a full crowd (when reading a book that climaxes in a New York train station, I mostly just see the main characters), I can visualize the size of it, pieces of scenary...

It depends on how good of a writer the person is. Those who I can perceive all of the different aspects of a piece of writing tend to be excellent writers.

My own personal imagination is very vivid to the point that it cannot be translated without losing something. Right now I'm imagining of the main hall of my dwarves and it is... no less than astounding.
