King Of Fighters general

For me, it's being able to get not only every SNK character, but nearly every fighting game character ever made (and then some,) all in one package, and able to beat the crap out of each other. It's the ultimate fighting game crossover. Of course, if I want an actual professional fighting experience, I'll just go play the actual games, but for what MUGEN is, it's still pretty fun.

And as for '"custom" attempts at bringing those guys into mugen and modern KOF', I'll admit, some of them are a bit... lacking. I've never seen any actual bad ones, but some, such as basically every single striker-made-character by Miasmu and/or Mr.S, could have used some more work, and there are others, I'm sure. But then you get guys like Ko F John Crawley, or the recent Mickey Rogers revamp, and those are pretty amazing. So it really depends on just who you're looking for, and who you're getting it from.

You know, this one thing about Mai's wardrobe puzzled me: Why is the designer so insistent on leaving her arms and legs almost completely bare? Not even fishnet stockings and arm sleeves the way many kunoichi are depicted with, for the Zettai Ryouiki factor and as a Hand Wave (if a filmsy one) for "protecting" those body parts?

So, I'm right in the middle of the Fatal Fury Motion Picture. It's been a bit boring so far, but right in the middle of the movie, we get this gem:

Andy: Just who was that man in the mask?

Jubei: One thing's for sure; he's not the Lone Ranger.

Made my day.

EDIT 2: Just finished the movie. Better than OVA 1, but not as fun as OVA 2, even though it is better than it in some ways. The main thing that the movie has over the previous OVA's is stronger and more consistent characterization, with the highlight being the development of Andy&Mai's relationship. However, when it comes to the action and the cheese, the movie just doesn't do it quite as well as the second OVA did, despite having a bigger budget. It also just feels too long for what it is, whereas the second OVA was at just the right length; long enough for some decent development, but not too long before the OVA overstays it's welcome. Overall, the movie's worth watching at least once, but I'd take the second OVA over it any day of the week.

Even if she is 17, she doesn't look anywhere close to that, so her relationship with Terry still bugs me a bit. (Though what really creeps me out is how forward she is towards him; it's almost like she's a stalker.)

In regards to characters not aging, could it be a consequence of Those From The Past's fiddling with time?

Its because SNK couldn't be arsed with having to deal with age an replacing beloved faces. Otherwiswe we'd get Mai retiring at 40

There coulda been lots of inlore reasons why people never age. The three treasures for Kyo and Iori, NESTS genetic tampering, Orochi magic, shitloads of anti-aging cream if you're Mai. Dermatologists would have a conniption.

I'd prefer the headcanon of Shiranui-ryu Ninjutsu having a mysterious Fountain of Youth effect on female practitioners (a la Hiten Mitsurugu-ryu for its two only practitioners, both of whom are male), perhaps done via a special technique a la Naruto's Tsunade.

There are those. However, thanks to XIII, Those From The Past and their tampering with time are more or less the culprits at this point, and with Ash putting a stop to it, probably Rock with actually be a 17-18 year old in the next game.

Speaking of XIII's ending, how can Heidern still remember Ash if the latter omitted himself from existence to stop Saiki's plan?

And another thing, coming out of Fatal Fury The Motion Picture, and I noticed that SNK took a lot from the movie for the Orochi arc. Let's compare:

Mars/Ares = Orochi (both are the malevolent deities to be fought)

Laocorn = Chris (Both end up possessed by Mars/Ares and Orochi respectively)

Jamin = Yashiro (both come off as the "heavy guy" type. Difference being that the former does fire; the latter does Earth)

Panni = Shermie [both are the dark chicks, difference being element of representation (former does water; latter does lightning)]

Hauer = Goenitz (both handle wind powers)

Sulia = Yuki (Kyo's girlfriend) (Both are important for the malevolent deities, with the difference being that the latter gets her happy ending with Kyo)

Except the Orochi arc was actually good. Whereas the movie was just kind of meh. (And one thing I forgot to mention about it is that the plot was a mess. Whereas the Orochi arc actually made sense, though being loosely based off an established myth probably helped.)

So, there's been something I've been thinking about lately that's really been bothering the crap out of me; what makes the Kusanagi's, Yagami's, Ash and all the various clones so much more 'special' than everyone else? Sure, they can control flame from birth, I get that. And if they were the only people in the SNK-verse that could do so, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Except that that Billy, Mai, Andy and Jae Hoon can also generate flame, and they didn't need any fancy Kusanagi or Yagami DNA.

I suppose you could argue that the Kyo and the others don't need to use a weapon to harness their flame-wielding, whereas Billy and Mai do, but that doesn't change the fact that they can still generate flame. And Andy doesn't even need a weapon whenever he does it. (In his flying-kick DM, as well as a '01&'02 back-flip special.) And then there's Jae Hoon, who can kick up fire without batting an eye. Heck, even if we were only to stick with KOF-only characters, Ralf (who I consider to be a different character in practice from his original Ikari Warriors incarnation,) can generate freaking explosions at point-blank range without blowing himself to bits. And then you have so many other characters who, while not being able to generate flames, can still create energy, electricity, and who-knows-what-else.

The point is, there doesn't seem to be anything that makes the Kusanagi's, Yagami's, Ash and the clones any more 'special' than most other SNK characters other than being born with their abilities as opposed to having to work for them, which to me actually makes them less special. Someone like Terry who worked long and hard to be able to generate energy is more 'special' to me than someone who was just born with the ability to generate flame like Kyo. He got it handed to him, basically, and I just can't accept that as the sole reason why he, Iori, and the rest are thus stronger and more powerful than the rest of the cast, when a good deal of SNK's characters have abilities that not only match up to Kyo's, but that they had to work towards instead of just being given. Is Kyo (and, by extension, the other natural flame-wielders,) just that good? Or is there something else I'm missing here?

(And just to make a few things clear, I understand that Kyo and the rest's abilities are mystical, which might have something to do with it, and I also understand that Ash became quite powerful by absorbing the abilities of Iori and Chizuru. But the latter makes sense, as Ash absorbed the abilities of two other fighters. The former doesn't make so much sense.)

The Kusanagi and Yagami flames are not just flames, else there would be no reason they're required as essential components of the method to defeat the Orochi (namely, working in conjunction with the Yata/Kagura family's powers). They're more like what Hellfire is to normal flames; that their in-game depiction is mechanically no different from other flame-users like Mai and Billy is simply a matter of Gameplay and Story Segregation.

That is totally the reason, and an issue I have with a lot of Japanese stories in general. There's a manga put out for NESTS saga that makes it clear K' puts literally no effort into doing anything, but is vastly more powerful than almost the entire cast. We get character building scenes for just about everybody furiously training for the tournament except for him and Maxima, even though his one inch punch explicitly takes off half of one of the Kyokugen team's health (yes this comic uses health bars and strike bombs unironically).

Genetics will always beat out hard work and determination according to this series's writers.

Except when willpower is required to tame/control the powers imparted by said genetics, lest they destroy one's body and/or soul or otherwise go out of control.

Other than a couple of wangsty ending cutscenes that's never held him back, so I dunno.

x4 Well, okay; that sort of makes sense. And if they're essential to sealing the Orochi, then they're also likely incredibly effective when both fighting Orochi and the the Orochi-naga, (Vice&Mature, New-Face Team, etc.) But that doesn't mean they should still trump human opponents like, say, Terry Freaking Bogard. And, yet according to x3, they do.

I think I get it now. I just don't agree with it at all; that's the real problem here.
