Perhaps in other media as well, but I truly think that sounds are being overlooked in providing a full sensory experience.

I'm not precisely sure why I'm saying this. Perhaps it had something to do with me remembering Freespace 2 just now, how great the voice acting was, and the thrill of hearing "Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration" and then a cruiser popping out of nowhere and charging anti-cap beams. Looking back on it now, it was so good that I can even forgive or overlook the fact that sound doesn't really travel through space, and I'm a bit of a stickler for that kind of detail.

My favorite sounds:

  • The various sound effects in the Half Life series and other Valve properties. For example, the classic "item respawn" sound from Team Fortress Classic that's also in Team Fortress 2.
  • The various car noises from Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit, from the purr of the Jaguar XKR's idle engine to the high-pitched roar of the Lamborghini Diablo SV's V-12 to the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR's almost jet-like bellow.
  • Similarly, the engine noises and exhaust notes from the new Hot Pursuit, from the Dodge Viper SRT-10's powerful bellow to the overpowering scream of the Lamborghini Reventon to the deep roar of the Bugatti Veyron EB16.4.
  • The varied weapon noises from Killing Floor. And, of course, "LOADSAMONEY!"
