I don't like it much either, but my mom hates war, and my little brother barly wants to play it at all anyway. I need to find somewhere near me I can just meet with people to play games.

Exactly so. There are basically two skills involved in Risk: First, encouraging Let's You and Him Fight situations among the other players, and second, choosing the right time to make a bid for control.
In my experience, the main skills involved are planning, anticipating your opponents' moves, and most importantly, being able to adjust your plan if things go wrong (bad luck with the dice and/or an unexpected card set from an opponent). The biggest mistake poor Risk players often make - and I should know, I've been one myself for a long time - is to remain hell-bent on carrying out their original plan when it has failed, rather than regrouping and considering alternatives. It's a sure-fire way to get wiped out quickly.

Ah, I remember the time one soldier in southeastern NA held that land against a twenty man army. It became dubbed the "Punk with a BB Gun."
