This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

I would play the religion card, but considering that I'm pretty pro-gay marriage, it doesn't work as well.
But anyway, it's still quite remarkable that 100 Tories will not toe the party line on this issue. And I wonder what other religious leaders think? I mean, we've not heard from the Muslim or Jewish leaders on the issue.
Hopefully, this won't be shot down. It can't be. There is too much support from the public and both Houses themselves.
Ugh will it never end.
“This pattern is, of course, affirmed by many other religious traditions — understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, and for the creation and upbringing of children, marriage is an expression of our fundamental humanity.”
All I take from this is; "blah blah tired old homophobic rhetoric blah blah blah you queers are beneath us blah blah blah."

Oddly enough I think that a lot of big religious figures are on board with all this. The Archbishop of Canterbury always come across as having the right idea about stuff.
And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Rowan Williams is against it because he doesn't want a schism in the Anglican world
Dutch Lesbian@ Piccy. Lovely.
@ Batcil. Hmmm... I seem to get the impression that either Muslim leaders are indifferent or not very happy with this idea, considering what they've said to the Scottish Executive.
But... doesn't that cause a schism... anyway?

Really? Oh well.
And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)IHG, It would, the Anglican church is being held together by some pretty thin threads man
Dutch LesbianI just want this whole debate out of the way really and the law to be passed. It is getting rather tiring.
Though watching the church tear its self apart is rather amusing.
Well, we have between 1-3 years till it passes.
So, either it does the Amazon.co.uk thing where it passes before you requested, or the ebay.co.uk thing where it come after you requested it.
Rowan Williams is in the very unfortunate position of having to balance the liberal and traditionalist elements of the Church. I do not envy him, but nor do I have much sympathy for his relentless fence-sitting.

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.Fence-sitting is one of the only tools he can use to keep things semi-civilised at the moment. Don't knock a good fence-sitter: they have good co-ordination, reflexes and balance just to stay on those things.
EDIT: Oh, and a thick hide. Fence-sitting usually gets you splinters...

So many ups...
But yeah, I'm now kinda wanting to go to mass this Sunday, just to see what my local priest's reaction to this is. He tends to be fairly liberal (and has a sense of humour, as strange as it might seem), and given the Pope has yet to invoke Infallibility - and he's personally stated he never will - he's free to personally decide whether or not he disagrees with it.

Call me a cynic, and I'll just maintain I'm a realist. Read that article again, and see.

That's a bit slow — there's already a Drought Alert on here...
Keep Rolling OnWhy use trains to transport the water? Wouldn't using pipes to pipe the water down from Scotland make more sense? (I would've thought the Lake District and the rest of North England would do fine for that.)
EDIT: Having read the article, canals seems to be a logical method; but getting the water to flow down from Scotland to Southern England naturally sounds like a nightmare given the interceding geography. Cheap once its constructed though.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.I don't think there are canals that cross the Scottish Border — below that, isn't there a ready-built canal network?
Keep Rolling OnExtending the high speed rail network to Scotland would have other benefits, of course, since it could be used for passenger and freight transport.
Canals are being suggested by Boris Johnson, but I assume that would require new ones being built.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.it's not the trains, it's pipelines that follow alongside the train track.
Couldn't that be done now — pipes alongside the sections of the ECML and the WCML — at least in the Scottish Borders?
Keep Rolling OnI thought that the planned end result of HS 2 would be a high-speed rail link between Edinburgh and London, although that's obviously a very long term goal.

Its got too many M Ps supporting it, plus unlike America, no party can run on a platform removing it if they want to be elected
