In a few ykttw discussions, for this, this, and the ykttw for Various Video Game Views, I got resistance on the first two from a couple of tropers who insisted that this page should be all that's necessary for how we see video games, and that all the pages listed should even be merged into it.

So rather than argue further, I'm putting this up to you guys. Should this be an index, allowing any video game view that's common enough to be a trope page, or should this just be a page about the varied views in games, and that's it?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Different methods of camera control are tropes. The individual camera styles have plenty of examples, affect the gameplay in different ways, and can easily have their own pages. So, index.

And I'm not happy that you ignored my complaint against the title and launched it anyway (without anyone else supporting Various Video Game Views). That was rude. The fact that you launched it knowing that it would go straight to TRS doesn't help either. If it's not even decided whether to make it a trope or an index, how is it ready for launching? >=(

I can make a redundant thread, but under protest.

Dragging YKTTW issues into TRS is very bad form because problems are easy to solve in YKTTW and difficult to solve in TRS. Launching prematurely and assuming TRS will be able to fix any problems creates more work for everybody. Remember The Alexander? We spent like three weeks on a TRS thread for it because the launcher couldn't wait an extra couple days. One troper to another, please don't do it again, okay? sad

This is clearly discussing pages already around, which brings this well beyond ykttw alone. And in case you didn't notice, it was not easy to solve on ykttw, which is why I brought it here.

My problem with the one YKTTW was that it specifically didn't qualify as a trope. The ability to push a button to rotate a camera vs having a computer rotate a camera for you isn't a trope.

Personally, I think camera controls could easily be one page, but I'm not too concerned if it isn't.

DQZ, you sure do seem to attract controversy...

I think the various differences are too nitpicky to make different pages. "Camera controls" are barely a trope as is; pretending that the different sorts are all meaningful enough to be separate pages is pushing it.

Wait. Where does it say something has to be "meaningful" to be a trope? I have never seen that requirement written anywhere on this site. If it is, I'd like to see where.

"Not meaningful" is the whole point of People Sit On Chairs; yes, it happens a lot, but it's not meaningful to the story or to the work. Most of the videogame mechanics that have pages are technically not tropes; would a game be changed in a meaningful way if the Life Meter was swapped out for a numerical display of your hitpoints? In most cases, the answer is a resounding "Not really, no."

[up]So are you agreeing they can still make their own pages anyway, despite not fitting the proper definition of a "trope"?

What? Gameplay mechanics are totally tropes. They're, like, gameplay tropes.

I agree. Even Fast Eddie has gone on the record of saying that game play mechanics are tropes. Some of them are gameplay tropes like the camera tropes. Some of them are interface tropes like Life Meter vs. just showing the number of Hit Points. They have meaning the same as a Badass Longcoat does and the effect the way the player experiences the media. That's not meaningless.

The difference between the camera being controlled by the computer and being controlled by the player is the difference between the game showing you what it wants you to see in a prepackaged view, vs giving you the freedom to explore the environment at your leisure.

And I can personally say that how the camera is controlled will affect how you can see things in the game.

Yep. We have all sorts of tropes for camera shots in films and TV shows. Camera controls in video games are the media equivalent.

So... would it be better to make a crowner, or to just ask Eddie?

I mean a crowner to allow either the current pages to stay and have further pages, or marge them all into this page.

No way they should be merged to one page when we have this many tropes for Camera Tricks and first person is just a version of P.O.V. Cam or Head Cam ect. How would you list them on pages?

EDIT: ahh we already have Fixed Camera. Also P.O.V. Cam does not cover videogames and First-Person Shooter is a style of gameplay and it doesn't cover other First Person games such as First Person RPG like Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest or Elder Scrolls and such.

Yeah, I was thinking of a first person game view ykttw, but after making sure it's allowed.

Anyway, should I ask someone like Eddie to resolve this or make a crowner?
