Egypt will be fun, if only because I can do all my Egyptian Department of Antiquities jokes.
(Seriously though, don't fuck with the Department of Antiquities. They're vicious people when it comes to protecting Egypt's past.)
Nous restons ici.I don't like Egypt, because it's...it's...it's too cliché. I guess I just watched too many Egypt-related, archeological movies that it's tiring.
"Life is eternal; and love is immortal; and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight." - R. W. RaymondYou'd be hard pressed to find a country that isn't overused. If we can't come to an agreement, we should probably invent a fictional place.
My name is darthnazgul and TV Tropes has ruined my life.
I dunno. I like the Egypt idea. :/
I'd rather not, especially considering that "it's cliche" isn't really much of an objection anyway.
I agree, just trying to see if we can all come to an agreement.
My name is darthnazgul and TV Tropes has ruined my life.Egypt works. And yay, my current character intro post doesn't need modifying for terrain!

Here's a draft of the OP. I'm working off of the assumption that my character is sponsoring the dig and put out advertisements for help to draw other characters there.
In my opinion, I think that's a perfect way to start the thread
Note to self: Pick less edgy username next time.I vote fictional place that's similar to Egypt. More freedom that way.
Help?.. please...And I vote a very definite no to that.

I'm fine with just Egypt.
the color todayReminds me of Character Titanic.
Help?.. please...Titanic involves a very specific event. Egypt is just a place.
the color todayStill, it's a real life place. So are you completely sure this won't limit any freedom? I'd say freedom is like one of the most important thing in these threads.
Think, what can't you do with Egypt that you can do with a fictional place that's similar to Egypt.

Help?.. please...This is a fictional Egypt. There's some leeway.
the color todayThe really huge problem with using a made-up country is the whole Like Reality, Unless Noted thing. We very deliberately make CDT settings either interdimensional hangouts or superficially real-world locations for a reason - providing a common baseline for characters of all settings. A fictional country puts a strain on that.
It's bad enough handwaving why my characters from 2416 are on modern Earth without also having to handwave the fact that they're in a fictitious country.
(The only moderately huge problem, incidentally, is that in my view it's just plain lazy.)
I'm a little meh on fictional country, I just don't want it in Egypt.
Call me irrational, but I just don't want it in Egypt. Or Central America, now I think about it. I'd like to shoo out the Ancient Egyptian/Mayan/Aztec archaeological digs because they're a tad overused. Maybe just a tad.
"Life is eternal; and love is immortal; and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight." - R. W. RaymondAgain, 'it's cliched' is not really a valid argument for this situation. This is a writing exercise, not a work intended for mass consumption.
Also, if we go with a fictional country, people are going to want to worldbuild, and that moves the focus off the characters.

"Jack, you have debauched my sloth."@Tera Chimera: Good OP, but it's going to be a bitch to handwave my characters being invited, seeing as they have no computers in their world.
If I knew how I know everything I know, I'd only be able to know half as much because my brain would be clogged up with where I know it fromI don't expect every character to come via invitation; it was just a way to get most characters over. I don't mind if they just stumble on the dig, as KC is doing with his characters.
No, no, that's the thing, having them come in by invitation is perfect for them: they're a group of mercenaries and they'd be thrilled to take up a job in another dimension before other groups can pounce on it. But the fact that the invitation is being sent by computer kinda puts a damper on that. Oh well, we'll see.
If I knew how I know everything I know, I'd only be able to know half as much because my brain would be clogged up with where I know it fromMaybe because of interuniversality screwiness, the ad somehow found its way them via however it's done in their world. The entire setup is all mostly just a big handwave, anyway, so don't worry too much about it.
I'm not convinced "it's cliched" is ever a valid argument, really - what primarily matters is how well something's written, not how often it's used. But in any case, I think it's certainly besides the point in a thread like this.
And I second the point that not everyone has to arrive by invitation. As we've discussed in the past, bringing characters in with a motivation is highly important to making these things work. The invitation is just a way to help get them there.
Also, why is there no posting in Cruise? I know I haven't posted in some time (various issues, both real life and character related), but no one else has either.
Assuming I'm writing it (which it looks like I'm going to, since no one else has come forward), Egypt.
I might stick it up tomorrow for people to look over, but not start the actual thread.
