Seriously, if this goes ahead even the book I am attempting to edit now will have to be classified under categories it was never meant to fit into, and any photographs I take for my Photomedia class will have to be classified as well.

That said, I don't think these Christian lobbyists can really afford to battle the publicity they'd accidentally give any artist who gives them the middle finger in their work in any medium.

What do you think about this bastard of a policy down under? I hope it doesn't pass, our classification system's bat-shit crazy enough as it is.

I do agree, sort of, with what was said in the beginning of that article - nudity or violence should not be treated differently by classification systems depending on 'artistic merit'. That's a very nebulous thing to be classifying things based on.

But really, concerns of pedophilia are getting ridiculous. If something's obviously drawn/taken with sexual undertones fair enough, but simple child nudity isn't pedophilia. Children are naked all the time.

Be not afraid...

Maturity ratings don't get classified on artistic merit, reviews do.

That said, this is extreme. I wish "parent your fucking kids" would be sufficient, but obviously that's not the case — but this isn't a good idea either.

Oh god I'll have being trying to find this[1] painting for years ever since I saw it on a school trip.

It sort of scared itself onto my psyche.

Just goes to show that dictatorships aren't the only ones with overly-heavy censorship.

The "parent your kids" line is a good one in theory, yes, but it's really not possible to be privy to each and every single thing a child does. Content ratings are a decent way to get around this.

You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!

[up]If parents would've actually paid attention to them. Also, I'd've expected a thread such as this to have Cluster F-Bomb attacks in multiple instances per post. Why not?

"Children are naked all the time."

Yeah, will they be censoring the cute family photos of Jimmy falling asleep on the toilet when he was 2?

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

^ No. They'll just send the party van to that person's house and arrest them for possession of child porn.

It happened once here in the States but the judge saw right through the prosecution saying basically "do you not have kids?" and tossed the case right out.

But the chief of staff of the Australian Christian Lobby, Lyle Gavin, said there were dangers to children everywhere because of the failure of the classification scheme. Arguments against tighter classification measures and using technology will be mounted from the extreme left and the extreme right of politics, he told the inquiry. On the right, the nanny state argument will be applied against tougher measures and the use of filtering technology. On the left, it will be argued that adults should be able to see whatever they want, even claiming photos of naked children have artistic merit. The committee is to report by June 30.

I am so fucking sick of false equivalences, and the implication that whatever the speaker is proposing is the reasonable, moderate choice. >:(

How about this: what Gavin claims to be the extremist positions, are actually correct. It would, in fact, be government intrusion, and things that he finds icky often do have artistic merit. If anything is extremist, it's saying that censorship should be increased.
