I'm surprised that this hasn't got a page yet, considering this the most reviewed Haruhi Suzumiya fanfic ever.

Who liked this fanfic? I liked it, but not loved it. While the climax was pretty awesome, excessive Kyon-centricism bugged me, and his Freudian Excuse left a rather bad taste in my mouth.

Meet The Suzumiyas exists as a fanfic recommendation, though.

I liked it. It's been quite a long time since I've read the fanfic, but I have to say that it was pretty good. It wasn't the best Haruhi Suzumiya fic, but it was a fun read.

And as for the ending (not the epilogue, but the last chapter of the story itself), I thought that it was a bit disappointing, but I didn't really mind when I read it...

[up] Ah! Finally, somebody responded! Very happy!

What did you think about the resolution of Kyon's issue? I really, REALLY, hated it. I mean, come on, it wasn't even foreshadowed properly and when the author mentioned that certain Austrian neurologist...for the love of fuck, that was one of the most Egrigious example of Small Reference Pools I ever witnessed.

Then again, what came after made up for it. Somewhat.

Btw, there is a page. Can anyone update on that?

I might edit the page sometime. I just probably have to reread the story a bit more until everything (or most of it) returns to my memory.

As for the ending (that's what I presume your meaning of "the resolution of Kyon's issue"), I can say that it did seem a little sudden. Not fully a Deus ex Machina in my opinion, but close.

Then again, the author may have intended that from sometime back and decided to stick with it. Of course, it didn't end up as great as he (maybe) expected.

I don't remember anything about Sigmund Freud because I quickly browsed through chapters 29 and 30, but I can say that the quality (IMHO) was lessened because of the way Kyon's memories returned. I mean, that passage. It wasn't just Deja vu. I doubt that a single passage can let amneisacs regain their memories, even if that passage describes the memories that they lost.

Anyway, you can disagree with me if you like. I just think that it could have been better, but I wouldn't be the one to edit it.

[up] ..are you disagreeing with me? Because what you said is pretty much what I think.

Kyon said something on the line of "Hah! Suck it, Sigmund Freud! Who needs you when I can do self psychoanalysis by myself!"

I cringed. Again, I can't agree with you more about the memories part. Btw, has anyone read the freefalling kiss scene with this soundtrack?

So. Fucking. Epic.

[up] Ah. That. Soundtrack. Is. Epic. [awesome]

...Like I said, I haven't read the fic in a long time. I probably forgot some details.

To clear up the issue: I agree with you that the resolution of Kyon's issue was not very good. However, I didn't hate it. I simply thought that it seemed... mundane? Common? Expected?

...On everything else we have common ground, I guess.

XD I seriously need to make shorter posts... And use less ellipsis.

[up] We pretty much agree on everything, except that the degree of...dissatisfaction about the resolution is different.

Come to think of it, why is this one so popular, anyway?

I believe that it's so popular because:

1. It's Kyonx Haruhi. Kyon lives with Haruhi.

2. It's an interesting concept.

3. It's ... old-ish?

4. It's long. That gives it the upperhand of having a lot of reviews.

5. The first chapters were promising.

6. Fangirls (and maybe boys) expected fluff. Lots of fluff.

[up] Ah, of course. Why did I not think of that.

Seriously, though. The author needs to learn a thing or two about subtlety.

On the other topic, what do you think that bits of alien data thing stuck in Kyon's brain would do?

Well, JB is working on a sequel. The first chapter was already published, but he hasn't updated in a while, might be busy with other stuff.

Still, I'd assume that the data thing might come into play in his new story.

As for your previous question; in my estimation stuff that has more fluff or crack elements in it tends to do better than stories that go for a more in canon view of things.

There are exceptions of course, like Arty d'Arc's fics, and Durandall's recent work Later, but for the most part stories that have exaggerated elements tend to do better than ones that don't, unless the author already has a good following or the story is fairly solid on its own.

[up][up] I don't mind his 'lack of subtlety'. The novels weren't written like that, but they did have Kyon's constant monologues. Some were quite long, but they were semi-smoothly embedded in the work. Then again, I thought that some of them made Kyon look like he was having some kind of panic/paranoia attack...

[up] Yes, I have seen that sequel. If he updates then I'll read it, though I doubt that I'll be interested in it.

As for the alien data, I believe that it could be some kind of Chekhov's Gun but it might just help everyone know more about Kyon's mind... Was that phrased well?

Ah, you guys...so very brutal...and so very correct.

The ending was easily my biggest regret with the fic, followed by my lack of subtlety. Not sure how I'd fix it, but I think it's best to just move on.

I'm happy that you guys care enough to discuss it. I apologize for not doing a better job.

I kinda stumbled upon this forum shortly after I heard that there was a page on here for my fic. Happy to be of service!! ^_^

If you have any questions about the fic, feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

What to say... the story starts out rather exciting and I find myself loving the ending chapter as well. I know it seems like it was too overly dramatic for some others. I on the other hand find it a great way to end it.

Being that I'm a fluff writer myself. I enjoy seeing fluff done in decent ways or extravegent ways.

I'd rate this Haruhi fanfiction 11 out of 10. Why 11? Because it went one step further than all other Haruhi fanfictions and that rating is well deserved.

This is like the Final Fantasy VII of Haruhi fanfiction.

I...don't know about that. I would rate it about 9. And Final Fantasy IV.

Although I love both FF VI and VII, I'd have to give VI the upperhand for a few reasons, the largest being the nostalgia factor (it was the rpg that got me into rpgs).

I'm happy with the start, although there are a number of tropes that could definitely be added. I'm too lazy to do it, though. XD

Now that the new volumes are released, containing GINORMOUS revelations, I wonder how this would change the fic.

Probably not very much. I specifically ignored all of the 9th novel because when I started none of the plot threads were resolved. I'll probably ignore most if not all of novels 10 and 11 here, too. It's not because they weren't awesome (they were very awesome). I just don't think it's possible to fit the elements of those novels into my fic.
