So, it's here. What do we think?

(spoilers for ep)

It's a very odd sensation, revisiting that Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies Cold Opening. If you've read the manga, you know that these characters we're being introduced to are going to be very very dead, very very messily, very very soon. My mind rebelled; I spent the scene snarking a faux-noob Harsher in Hindsight liveblog over MSN. I just couldn't bear the thought of letting it get under my skin. Poor Mimi.

I suppose that's related to the big problem in adapting this sort of story. A lot of DW's early sections are heavy on the mystery and the wtf-is-going-on-here-ness (as are the later sections I guess, but not to the same extent). The adapters have their work cut out trying to make those parts interesting for people who already know what's going on.

Speaking of which (manga spoilers), they're telegraphing Shiro = Red Man pretty hard and early, aren't they? Not that that was ever particularly mysterious for long tongue

They're compressing quite a lot. I don't remember Ganta using his branch of sin until well after the race and all that jazz; we seem to be on a fast track for the arena arc. Though if they're doing that I don't get why they haven't dropped the candy subplot entirely. Shrug.

Oh, and Shiro's voice was pretty much spot on.

I searched the forums for a DW manga thread... and didn't find one. I'm sure there used to be one here @_@

Shiro is Hanazawa Kana using her Nessa voice.

I don't care anything at all about the rest, thats enough to keep me watching.

Finally...gonna dl when I have time.

I've been waiting forever for them to animate this series, now I can finally figure out what the hell the Wretched Egg's attack is supposed to be.

A: I thought we had a Deadman thread at some point as well, but it was not on the list of "Anime/Manga that already have threads" even before I deleted the ones that were no longer active.

B: They are keeping that plot because of the interactions between Ginta and the other prisoner.

[up]You mean the attack at the start? No luck. There is a generic "hexagons attack through the window" then blackout then aftermath.

That's the one and only attack she ever uses. I don't remember if she uses any other attack, but it's always that one ability if I remember correctly.

Also, does anime Ganta look a bit old compared to his manga counterpart? That clip of a fake Ganta bragging about killing his friends is a nice addition though.

edit: Watched it, not even the animators have a clear idea of what that attack is supposed to be?!

And why is it purple and not red? I assume that's made of blood as well.

Regarding the op and ed themes...there aren't any op themes, but for the ed theme...they all look so happy in the ending song. [lol]

I got about as far in the manga as the double-page spread of the slaughtered classroom (Is that a spoiler? It happens three minutes in) but made it to the end of the episode thanks to bad lighting (Both in the anime and the glare on my PC screen.) although given everything so far i don't know if i'll be able to stick with the whole series.

At least Ganta seems like a protagonist i can warm up to.

The manga always struck as being terribly written, but will the anime fix that? It remains to be seen. However, I don't have much tolerance for it in the first place, so I won't give it much of a chance.

I wouldn't say its winning any writing awards. The whole explanation of how he ended up convicted was...sketchy. There was "overwhelming evidence", but they never showed us any, and they didn't bother to give an explanation for how they think he managed to do that.

And the entire concept of the Deadman Wonderland is...really hard to swallow.

I'm going to keep watching, but its not at the top of my list for the season or anything.

Aren't the premises of most manga/anime pretty hard to swallow to begin with? That's what makes them appealing.

As for other things I'm looking out for...maybe now we can figure out whether Karako is supposed to be black, or just really really REALLY tan.

I have a pretty flexible suspension of disbelief, but they really pushed it with the setup of this show.

Ah...I guess you sorta need to grow up with Dragon Ball and that other Toriyama anime about the purple haired robot girl in order to have my level of suspension...

But compared to most other anime this season, this is pretty low in the suspension of disbelief. I mean, look at Dog Days and Nichijou.

I don't really care much about the premise (although I do think the premise is pretty stupid), but the writing is very inconsistent. Settings, characters, personalities, etc get introduced, dropped, re-introduced, changed around and whatnot quite often. I'd imagine there's a loose outline of the overall plot, but the author sucks at winging the details. Consistency is probably the most important aspect of worldbuilding.

The anime might fix this, but maybe.

I'm actually curious...asides from Yoh not telling anyone that Shiro is the Wretched Egg, Nagi suddenly going Axe-Crazy and then back to normal, and Madoka helping and then turning on Ganta immediately afterwards...what problems did you see in the manga?

...this reminds me, I REALLY want to see Madoka get animated

Personally, I assumed that no-one giving a damn about the incredibly flimsy evidence was simply a case of future!Japan's court system (and perhaps government as a whole) being Caribbean-dictatorship-level corrupt. I mean, they turned Tokyo into a bloodsport theme park. That's hardly a sign of a healthy state there.

I actually loved how quickly this episode sped through the trial. It made it look like even more of a joke.

I also thought the explanation for his arrest was a little questionable, but I'm intrigued enough by the rest of the episode to ignore that.

Also, Kana Hanazawa.

....does that dancing sunflower thing have significance or is it just there to be weird?

Hmm, that's true. It was understandable why the government would convict him, but I wonder what evidence they used to convince all the parents. I suppose that could be written off as them being insane from grief.

I forgot to mention...Ganta's face reminds me of Renton's.

They deliberately leaked the video to incense the populace. And this isn't modern Japan, but a near-future dystopia. It strikes me that any country that turns its former capital into a theme park built around butchering inmates in entertaining ways and then hosts school visits there probably doesn't have the world's greatest criminal justice system. This trial is unlikely to be particularly unusual in its lack of fairness.

God, that sound is nasty. The whole opening was pretty much High Octane Nightmare Fuel. Normally blood doesn't freak me out, but they did a great job.

The populace doesn't know about how they are killed. To them, DW is just a large amusement park that uses criminals as performers and laborers.

Not that Tamaki is particularly worried about it.

It might help explain everything about the trial if you realize that the defense attorney and the guy in charge of DW are the same person. I believe the jury and judge are ordinary people, but when the person defending you wants to experiment on you there is not much chance that you are getting out/away. As for not giving more reasons for Ganta getting a death sentence, that was the point. It is supposed to be a completely rigged trial. The manga version did not even give us that video, just the conclusion.

@the dancing flower: no real significance, but it does hint that the Obviously Evil guy is somewhat crazy. Not that that will be much of a secret after you hear what he orders done in the next episode...

Yeah, the video was a nice, if not soul-crushingly cruel, touch.

Also, waggling Mimi's head in front of Ganta? Dick move.
