[up][up]I should've clarified; I meant during the grace period. As you might be able to tell, I've been pretty frustrated since my fighting the Ur-Dragon during the grace period never really bore any fruit.

I just got this yesterday. So far I'm having a lot of fun but man is this game hard. So far two of my five deaths have been a goblin from out of nowhere smacking me upside the head. Just killed that hydra and I was on my way to the witchwood. I'm guessing you're not supposed to take those bandits that toss boulders down at you until you're higher level? They seem to two shot me and my pawn.

Yeah, there seem to be some places that are meat gated.

I'm getting that feeling. I'm not sure if I should drop it down to easy. I mean even the fights where I win are generally by the skin of my teeth. On the other hand every time I die it asks if I want to drop it down which is just insulting.

Hope you enjoy it. The Early Game Hell can be a little punishing but just push through.

i've had my eye on this game for a while, and now i might have an opportunity to actually get it as a gift from my father while he's travelling abroad.

as a sucker for dark fantasy i feel kind of obligated to at least try it out. i feel kind of bad for pc players though since i get the impression a lot of them would really like this game but idk if capcom will ever port it.

If it weren't for the fact that it bombed in America I'd welcome a redone version for current-gen consoles, especially since I never got to finish it.

actually i have read that it didn't bomb. it was more like a sleeper hit, like demon's souls, which got steadily higher sales over time due to positive word of mouth and critical acclaim. so much so that capcom wants to make it a franchise because it was one of their most profitable ip's in recent times.

I've heard that more Dragon's Dogma is on the way, but we'll have to be very patient. It's for the best really, wouldn't want to rush something like that.

I wonder which direction it will go though, the Dark Arisen or the original Dragon's Dogma route.

Hopefully more Dark Arisen style.

That game was scary, but awesome.

i've heard dark arisen was made with complaints about vanilla DD in mind, and was well-received for it, so I'm assuming the changes will stick.

Dark Arisen was a nice change from vanilla DD, sure, but I found the difficulty curve as you descended just a bit too steep for my liking.

If they do follow the feel of DA, hopefully they'll rebalance it a little.

What was Dark Arisen like?

from what i've heard it was a bit more like the souls games in terms of difficulty and atmosphere.

The soul armors sucked unless you were a M. Knight/archer.

I found that it was the eliminators that really screwed with me.

Ew.

The thing I liked about this game over Dark Souls is that it feels more like an adventure. You have an actual world to explore, and there are actual people in it, even if they usually have nothing to say. Dark Souls is just so... barren. It's like one long dungeon crawl and I'm not into that.

[up][up][up][up] It was not so much open world but more a collection of rooms as you go through, kinda like a Metroidvania but had rooms which had rare spawns and such things. some rooms had a steep difficulty curve so there was a bit of grinding required on occasion.

that's not necessarily what i was talking about. i was mostly referring to the art direction and general tone of bitterblack isle, which seems fairly bleak.

also keep in mind that mostly applies to bitterblack isle, which is separate from the rest of the game. it's not like they changed the entire atmosphere of DD outside of it. i doubt a new dragon's dogma would completely toss away everything about the first one to focus entirely on one specific section which is noticeably different than the rest of the game.

I thought Bitteblack Isle was Dark Arisen? I thought the whole DLC was about that?

Well Dark Arisen wasn't actually available as DLC. It was only available as a rerelease of Dragon's Dogma. You had to essentially buy the base game again if you wanted to play it. That being said, it made a few changes to the vanilla world in addition to the new Bitterblack Isle stuff. Most changes were for convenience (ferrystones were cheaper, and marker stones... whatever they were called, were more plentiful), but a few other small changes were included as well, like this one guy who used to sell those air-tight flasks no longer sells them, making them unatainable except by scavenging their known locations. But yeah, the core of Dark Arisen's added stuff was Bitterblack Isle. I never actually did get around to playing that. I beat the game after a 120+ hour playthrough, and felt satisfied. Didn't get very far on NG+ before I put it aside to play something else.

BBL can be done at a decently early level and is very different than the main game, I mean VERY different. It is really a whole other game but with the same combat system.

All I'd want from another Dragon's Dogma game is a larger game world. What they had was good, I just kinda wanted more. Possibly I was spoiled by the added portcrystals in the Dark Arisen version though. It only occurred to me relatively recently how to use a single portcrystal effectively.

And yeah, the difficulty curve is a bit steep, and there are definitely Beef Gates. After dark, the whole countryside is a Beef Gate XD. Definitely worth sticking with it though.

I was going to say the AI pawns are even not useless, but, well, they are sometimes *memories of that one time a caster pawn kept yelling that the monster was weak against fire and we should use fire but he wouldn't f*cking cast the fire buff I knew he had*.

They're mostly not useless though tongue
