[up][up] It could be part of the banner on every Troper Tales page. Oh, wait, it is... Yeah, well, if people can't RTFM when it's shoved in their faces, too bad. They can go cry into the puddles of despair from their broken dreams.

[up]If it was merely a problem of the uninformed whining when they didn't RTFM, I'd have a similar lack of sympathy.

But I doubt that we'd be having this conversation in the first place if all we were dealing with were a few bruised egos from people posting inappropriate stuff.

Maybe a redirect, similar to trying to edit if you haven't gone through the Get Known process, that always shows the rules before someone tries to add an entry to Troper Tales, could work. The upside is that we would literally be shoving the rules in their face, and they couldn't help but actually read them. Moreover, the extra step required may discourage some of the less-appropriate posters.

Of course, the downside is that there will inevitably be complaining about the extra step, and there's no proof that it'll actually work.

Hmm... do I always have to defeat my own arguments, or am I just trying to be fair to all sides? Trying to help the wiki - lot harder than it sounds.

Troper Tales always seemed to me like more of a compromise or "extra" than a necessity. If discouraging measures are taken and people complain, well... there are probably more effective methods of discussion, like on the forum! It might be annoying and it might deter people from posting to TT, but on a whole, what's the loss?

Just had a thought. It's too late for Troper Tales, since it's changing over to a new system, but what if we had different sets of tips for the different subpages. Like have one for Crowning Moment Of Awesome that says "Remember, it's Crowning MOMENT of Awesome. 'Everything Bob does' is not a moment."

Give each subpage namespace a banner enumerating the rules for that particular page type? Not a bad idea at all.

Not necessarily a banner, just tips on the edit page, like with Main/. Unless that's what you meant too, in which case, disregard.

Ah, you mean that the edit page would look at the namespace or type of page and pull the tip it displays from a list tailored to that type of page? That could work, if it's not too complicated to implement.

Not that tough. I'm not too excited about it, though. I get a real strong sense people just filter those out of view.

If it matters, they do remind me at times to cut back on spoiler tag usage and overuse of adverbs.

500:

Does that mean we should also remove any mention of any TT about warez or "one time I shoplifted a candy bar and got away with it?" Or were those nuked just because they fit a subjective definition of creepy?
At one point the guidelines barred stories about drug use. Because Drugs Are Bad.

And good thing, too, because I was going to take some crystal meth, but changed my mind when I found out I wouldn't be able to post about it in Troper Tales.

539:

"I'm habitual jaywalker." is a hell of a lot different from "I like to set cats on fire." The second one is creepy, the first one isn't. Both are illegal.
And conversely, "I have naughty thoughts about prepubescents" is really fucking creepy but, as long as it's only thoughts, not illegal.

541:

I think a reasonable rule of thumb for a contributor would be: if you have to make a judgement call about whether it is too creepy, it's too creepy. There is some guidance in the non-existence of pages: if we don't have a page we don't want that material.
I think it would improve Troper Tales tremendously if people stuck to this.

I fully agree with this. If people are still adding inappropriate stuff they really have no excuse.

Just in case you were wondering, Hershel. When I see a post having a bunch of quoteblocks with individual responses, I just skip it.

[up][up] Except there's nothing wrong with that. Unless you're saying it's more standard here to make double/triple/etc. posts, each responding to a different person. (That's usually frowned upon, though, on the general net, which is why people are trained to quote multiple posts instead.)

[up] Because then anyone reading has no context at all for the replies without having to go and look up all the posts.

Depending on where the posts are in the thread, this can go from "Not an issue" to "really confusing". Especially when you have a post like Hershele's where the posts they were responding to are on multiple previous pages.

Sorry to make a big fuss, but it's kind of, I'm a little put off at possibly having my posts ignored just for doing what's standard rules on almost every other forum elsewhere.

What.

Um... that's the universally recognized format for normal, everyday posters. Seriously, every single forum I've ever been on that's not Slashdot/Live Journal-style formatted, that's standard procedure.

Just say what you have to say. No need to tell people what they said.
You need to tell other people reading the thread what was said, so they can follow the conversation. How am I, trying to follow the conversation, supposed to know what Hershele was responding to without either memorizing the thread or having to manually search for every previous post?

Nope. It is the most annoying thing you can do on any forum board in the world. It is just that no one told you before.

I'd agree it's certainly not the most efficient way to go about addressing multiple posts.

I wouldn't say it's a certified mark of a troll, however. As this wiki shows, lots of people tend to follow precedent when it comes to figuring out how to do stuff online, so it's easy to see why someone would view it as standard.

I certainly wouldn't skip a post because it has a format I dislike or find annoying. No offense, but that's a bit on the rude side.

This is a minor issue, though. Can we get back to stuff that takes higher priority?

Um. Again:

Um... that's the universally recognized format for normal, everyday posters. Seriously, every single forum I've ever been on that's not Slashdot/Live Journal-style formatted, that's standard procedure.
As in, yeah, nobody ever told me because that's what every single poster on the forums I'm used to does. It's not just me doing it and everyone being too nice to say anything, that's literally standard procedure.

I agree that quoting the post just above you can get silly, but otherwise, that's normal forum flow elsewhere.

But, if you don't like that being done here, then you're going to have to tell me the correct way to respond to multiple people here.

[up] Could you give an example or two with the quote button used in a non-troll context. Maybe links?

The only non-troll context I had seen the quote been used several times was at Mafia Scum. Because of the nature of the game Mafia, a lot of analysis is needed.

But anywhere else, it implies that the poster is either Serious Business about the topic, or a troll.
