I changed the third paragraph of the description to clarify that the bit about some alcoholics being people who just drink but not to excess is about how this trope differs from reality, not an extension of the definition. Does that help?
Rhymes with "Protracted."Looks okay to me. Should probably pull it in for an Image Pickin'.
Fight smart, not fair. What's wrong with the image? He's drinking and looks like a mess. That seems to fit the trope. It's the misuse of examples that is the problem.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I've no problem with this image, although I might like to know which film it's from.
My posts make considerably more sense read in the voice of John Ratzenberger.agreed, picture is fine but the examples need hedgecutting. It should be limited to someone who drinks regularly, and regularly to excess almost to the point they are rarely sober and when they are they are always on the lookout for a drink.
Going down the list, I can't help but get the impression it was written by a temperance union. I mean, I'm pretty much seeing everyone who's been seen drinking listed there; I don't think I know enough about the shows in question to remove everyone, but phrases like "has shades of this sometimes" are setting off bells in my head - isn't the definition of an alcoholic that it's more than "sometimes"? At the very least, there should probably be mention of indications of characters' problem drinking.
