Honestly, I never thought that One of the parents was going to die. How many times have the father/mother figure been built up as a character and Killed Off for Real? (Ah, Mufasa, your death has helped to make your movie famous).

Also, I did think it was unique (Not unique to a single individual, but different from the norm, like you guys pointed out) that both Merida's parents were alive, and neither died in the back story.

Nukiki is stealing your feels.
Well...it may not be my favorite Disney movie, but Meridah is probably my favorite Disney princess. Though I do like Rapunzel and Jasmine too...

Mulan totally does not count.

They... kinda know? She's not considered one of the "primary" princesses. She's part of the extended lineup, not the core, for when they need to fill out crowd scenes (read: tea parties) or summat.

Princess Kida is my favorite princess.

Though, for Disney to acknowledge her existance, they also have to admit that they made The Black Cauldron and put Elionwy there too.

Which Disney will never do.

I do love me some Kida.

I am one of the few people out there who has no problem with The Black Cauldron and enjoys it thoroughly, so... make of that what you will.

I'm fairly sure I haven't seen The Black Cauldron since my age was in single digits, but from what I remember I can't come up with a good reason why it would be hated so much, besides the fuzzy guy who I remember as having many traits people associate with Scrappiness.

Well, The Black Cauldron is also in possession of the single worst hero in any animated Disney film ever. I think Taran is by far a more problematic character in that film than Gurgi.

[up]To paraphrase the Nostalgia Critic, you can pretty much replace all of Taran's dialogue with, "EHNENENENENENENNEEEEEEYAAAAAAAAAAH!", and no one would be the wiser.

I've heard this argument before. It's a pretty poor one. Why exactly would adding Kida to the Princesses mean they would also have to add Eilonwy? The two movies have nothing to do with each other.
Responsible adult
Eilonwy also lacks one of the more important Disney Princess traits: Age. Most Disney Princesses are about sixteen to eighteen. Snow White is somewhat up for debate, as she's quite young-looking, and Tiana is probably the oldest of them (though do they give her an exact game? I forget). Eilonwy looks to be about twelve—not really within "role model but still relatable" age range.

[up] Snow White was intended to be 14, and the general consensus for Tiana is that she's 19.

I think Belle may be 19 also. Certainly she's one of the more mature Princesses in her attitude and behavior.

@ Princesses: Karalora, it says on the Disney Princess page that the exec's stated that they would have to put Elionwy on the roster if they put Kida there. I'm not so sure how accurate that statement is, maybe some research on the matter will help.

I'll paraphrase the quote:
Eilonwy and Kida, on the other hand, are not so lucky (they even admitted that in order to have Kida in the line-up, Eilonwy must be included as well).

I don't think it's a coincidence that the two princesses from box-office flops are not considered part of the lineup though.

But she's around 20-22 phsyically, making her the oldest Princess.

I thought that Snow White was 16, she looks like she's in her twenties, so even if my guess is accurate it's not... accurate (?).

No, Snow White is very clearly a young adolescent in terms of her facial features and body shape. She looks slightly older in the Disney Princess brand art—compare it to frames from the actual film, and the design changes are obvious. This was probably done because a 13/14-year-old romantic lead seems a little creepy, 75 years on. To some, she might look older still because of her dated hairstyle—my mom's high school yearbook photo strikes me as being of a 25-year-old for a similar reason.
Responsible adult
I admit, I wouldn't mind Kida being a Disney Princess. But we like to joke that the problem isn't with Kida herself, it's that Milo is her respective Disney Prince. And poor execs just don't want to market a scrawny nerd. tongue (Note: This is probably not the real reason. It just sounds funny.)

[up] The real reason is her outfit.

She should have totally joined, though.

And on that note, we're derailing the thread.

Nah. Ariel's way nakeder than her, even if you count the fish tail as a "garment."

Honestly, they could change her outfit if they wanted to. How often do you see the regular princesses in any of the actual dresses from their films?
