I know it's commonly used here, but it's a pre-established phrase used in various games (whether game shows, video games, board games, tabletop games, etc.).

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Because its use in conversation is almost never about games.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.

^^ This, basically. As a dialogue trope, it's rarely, if ever, used to describe game show scoring. And in Game show usage, it's more often a "bonus round" than "bonus points"

I'm guessing the trope is Bonus Points If X. Am I right? ... More or less. Wow, I actually won this time.

— Wait, why wasn't this under Stock Phrases yet?

I also mentioned video games and tabletop games, and those do have bonus points.

It doesn't matter if some games have bonus points, because it's not about literal bonus points. It's about people allocating imaginary "bonus points" in dialogue, when there isn't even a point scoring system in the first place. The description of Stoic Spectacles awards bonus points for having long hair, for instance.

I suppose the page for the stock phrase could be changed to Bonus Points If X. However, it doesn't seem to be getting any misuse - every wick is a use of the stock phrase except, possibly, for the one on Auction (which appears to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the stock phrase) and the one allegedly on the page about Pokemon Gold and Silver (which I can't actually find anywhere). It's certainly not being used to refer to actual video game points, in any event.

Or Trope Bonus Points.

The thing with games is I can name quite a few that have bonus points. Off the top of my head, many fighting games give points after a round, depending on your performance.

Trope Bonus Points is not appropriate because this is a stock phrase which is used for things other than tropes. I have personally used it many times in real life.

EDIT: Huh. Well. According to the description, it is just about tropes. Any objections to me expanding that? The description is super-short, so it's not like a little extra detail is going to hurt.

Yeah, expanding it would be good. And I like Bonus Points If X.

If we go with Bonus Points If X, I'd prefer Bonus Points If so it can be used in a sentence. Though "bonus points for" is also common in example lists, such as "Bonus points for telling the truth to Carol... who happens to be Alice's best friend. Nice going, Bob."

Description re-written! I've expanded it to cover all colloquial uses of "bonus points if..." rather than just its use in trope examples, and added a couple of related links.

Would anyone object if I added some examples? This is one of those Seen It A Million Times things for me, so I had to search IMDB, which came up with three examples that fit. Hopefully that'll at least kickstart the Wiki Magic.

[up] Sure, go for it, as long as they fit the trope of course.

The first examples are up. I think we should stick with just "Bonus Points", though if it has to be changed it should probably be Bonus Points For since that's usually how it's used.
