The Bible, The Quran, and The Book of Mormon are thre scriptures recognized by very popular Abrahamic/Western religions. They are loaded with stuff that explains the negative impacts that they have had on society. If you disagree, you could try to make a utilitarian appeal to the good cancels out/overrides the bad. Categories: Absurdity, Injustice, Cruelty/Violence, Intolerence, Contradictions, Family Values, Women, Interpretation, Science/History, Good Stuff, Sex, Prophecy, Language, Homosexuality, Plagiarism, Changes. So, have these scriptures impacted society more for the good or more for the bad? Tropes pages: Judaism, Christianity, Mormonism, Islam, The Bible, Book Of Mormon, The Quran.

Oh, this'll go well.

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.

It is nothing moral philsophies has not already done.

A guy called dvorak is tired. Tired of humanity not wanting to change to improve itself. Quite the sad tale.

Thanks for the neutral position and ignoring the amount of good they've also brought along with them.

Also, you forgot the Torah. The Jews ain't happy you know. So anyway, about those topics:

Absurdity

Oh, no wait, you're totally prepared to make a flame war and attack western religions in any manner possible. Seriously people, it's okay to have an opinion on a subject, it's something else entirely when your aim is only attack someone else. Try to keep that in mind when you post, it'll help avoid a lot of tears and head butting.

Almost everyone picks the verses that suit them, the interpretations that suit them, to support their world view. Very few people keep an open world view and adjust it to match a theoretically unbiased analysis of scripture. So yeah, it's easy to point at religion and say it causes a lot of bad, but it's nothing that humanity wouldn't have done anyway. Religion just provides a convenient excuse. If it doesn't serve, people will find other excuses.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Does anyone wish to discuss this topic and think it can be kept civil?

I'm not convinced that it could remain civil. The urge to cherry-pick verses pasages that support your side of the argument, while undermining your opponents is still there.

How about we say "yes, scripture has impacted society" and move on?

The opening post is too lopped sided. If this topic was approached in a more delicate manner, I could see civility happening. Not here however.

[up]Heathen, you know you aren't helping out with stopping any potential, flames, right?

Locking it, then. I agree that the OP looks more likely to cause an argument than sensible discussion.
