Shooting at German airport:

I still hope for the current wave of revolutions to wash over to Teheran. I'd rather see them hanged by their own people.

News update: http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0, 1518, 748910, 00.html (Sorry, can't help the spaces after the commas.)

One thing that's doesn't fit his story is that the shooter bought the gun quite a while ago. (And that's not an easy task in Germany.)

^I've know people who had hunting rifles, but from what I was told getting a handgun is incredibly difficult.

This case underlines the need for stricter weapon regulations, nobody except for soldiers, police officer and maybe hunters should be allowed to possess guns and store them in their houses. Unfortunately, the German arms lobby wields too much influence in Berlin, hopefully that will change in the future.

It is incredibly difficult to legally acquire a gun in Germany, especially handguns. Our arms lobby is mostly busy pushing for more export permissions - they know that there isn't much money to be made inside our borders.

It isn't that easy to buy one on the black market, as well. You have to know where to look, and prices are quite high. (According to the police, the Fraport shooter paid 1, 000 for his FN, model unknown.) Takes some planning and/or contacts.

But you see, even with all your gun control laws, this one guy still got through.

Which just goes to show that gun control just plain doesn't work, just like how in American states with tight gun control, we have higher crime and violence than states with loose gun control.

But yeah, not the place for that debate, and Europeans seem to think even a slight fascination with guns as a fun hobby makes you the next workplace shooter. tongue

Sneering Imperialist
[up] I came to the conclusion that Europe and America aren't comparable gun-rights-wise a long time ago, the cultures are just too different in that regard. Americans sneering at the lack of gun rights in Europe is just as condescending as Europeans sneering at gun rights in the US.

So unless you really want to pick a fight, saying that gun control in Europe "just plain doesn't work" is not particularly appreciated tongue

Typhoid and swans - it all comes from the same place.

Indeed but it should be noted that statistics speak a very clear language in this matter. The homicide rate is much lower in Europe than in the USA, the same can be said about murder attempts with fire arms.

Well, I guess the American obsession with guns is a cultural attitude so arguing is futile.

Let's just not make that the topic here, okay? I've seen this debate derail too fast too often. It was a black market gun, no gun laws were involved in any kind. (I'll chime in when there's an extra topic for that.)

Nothing really new in the media. Some loose contacts with islamistic extremists a few years back, but they found no no real life connections to any extremist groups until now.

The other thing brsides the pre-purchased gun that seems strange to me - and the police - about the whole 'it was a spontaneous act- confession is that the guy was stone cold in his method (but thankfully too stupid to clear a jammed gun).

I don't know the day-to-day conditions of Frankfurt Airport, but did he just sit around there and wait for the first people in uniform he saw? How did he know a busload of Airmen were coming?

He had been working there a while - a few months, as far as I remember -, so he was quite familiar with regular traffic procedures, and busloads of American soldiers are really not that uncommon at Fraport. As far as I know, he was actually working that day and really just waited for a target of opportunity. Single sources tell us that he even asked if they were going to be deployed in Afghanistan.
