Fight smart, not fair. You're right. Perhaps a good image would be of Himura Kenshin...He's shown plenty of times next to his former self, the Hitokiri Battosai... Perhaps one of those images would work?
Eh. I only know Kenshin is atoning because I read it.
Maybe Zuko from Avatar? I don't watch it all that much but I know he switched sides to make up for something.
This trope might be unimagable, considering it's going to mostly need a caption to show it.
Edit: Errr, besides using two images that is.

Or a comic image.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThis is going to need at least two pictures. One where the character looks and what he did and having My God, What Have I Done? moment and another where he/she sets out, looking determined to do something about it.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I agree with the Kenshin Idea. Maybe the caption should be something like "He has that scar for a reason"
Sufferer of Floating Head SyndromeFirst thing I thought of was perhaps a Knight from myth setting on some quest to atone for his sins.
I can't think of anything that would fit that though.
Maybe the last panel or two of this comic. But that's a huge maybe. I'm just throwing it out there.
I don't get that at all.
Perhaps a shot of the List from My Name Is Earl?
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)Thane Krios? Or Earl could do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXkI1sTDoEgI think a picture of the kind where someone kneels with a sword to give themselves up in service would work. You don't really need to show bad being done, because the acting of being sorry, asking for forgiveness implies a bad thing.
The hard part is showing someone actively trying to make it better. Either a panel of a webcomic where someone says "i want to make this right" or the sword thing as before
I vote for My Name Is Earl, that Kenshin fellow reeks of Fan Myopia.
I TELL YOU HWAT!Has anyone actually proposed an image?
Fight smart, not fair. There's the last two panels of this El Goonish Shive strip that was proposed earlier...it's so-so, but it's better than the zombie pic by far.
Ah, screw it. The title speak for itself, since any english-speaking adult knows what the word atoner means.
I TELL YOU HWAT!I'm not really a fan of the EGS strip. I'm not finding anything in the examples either.
First key to interpreting a work: Things mean things.Bump...any other ideas?

Current image is crap.
