There's a theory going around that SATAM didn't start out as a Sonic show, but just as some kind of fantasy adventure thing. Then Sega stepped in and added in the characters of Robotnik, Sonic, and Tails. The concept art says it all:

This was one of the earlier designs for SATAM Robotnik.

And an early design for Sally Acorn.

Now this is all just a theory, but it would explain why there are characters who are members of royalty (The Acorns, Antione D'epardieu), the evil wizard villains (Ixis Nagus, Lazaar), and all the other fantasy-adventure sort of things.

In regards to Sonic making punk personalty popular discussion. Sonic is the trope codifier for Mascot with Attitude and there was tons of expy of Sonic around the 90's. Some horrible, some great.

Switch punk with funk and Toejam and Earl were awesome imitators of that type of mascot.

Vector da man was also pretty rad for his games, but more a general badass.

I've been playing Sonic Heroes lately and Mystic Mansion is a fantastic level. It's really cool how the music actually progresses depending on what part of the level you're on(and is the only level where this happens), I wish we a game where every level did that.

That's kind of why I wish Sonic Team would hire this fella one of these days.

Why did he have to make the original video private? It illustrates what he did much better than the final video.

Yikes! If that made it to air, that would have been even MORE hated.

That design reminds of Ixis Naugus from the comics... he was actually supposed to be the villain from Season 3 of Sat AM...

But anyway, that looks like a fusion of Robotnik and Ganon. Kind of cool, actually. If Captain N was still a thing, I'd see a neat crossover there. Robotnik tries to pull in some firepower from another world. Ganon, or Ganondorf, is abusing the Triforce of Power, they get fused together, bada-bing.

The only problem would be making Link useful while Sonic's around. Granted, it'd be a children's cartoon, and with Sat AM logic, Sonic doesn't have to be Superman Prime in terms of speed - you'd also have a Running Gag with Link riding on Sonic's shoulders. Or maybe Sonic's Speed Shoes would be stolen like "in that one game". He'd still Spin Dash, but wouldn't be able to travel as fast, necesitating Link's questing expertise.

You wouldn't really even need the excuse - Saturday morning cartoon logic. But alas, crossovers between retro video game characters are rare outside of emulators and Smash Bros these days.

EDIT:

Can you imagine the terror both worlds would go through if Robotnik and Ganon fused? Robotnik's genius engineering mixed with Ganon's... well, IIRC, he's an ogrish, demonic sorceror with a MacGuffin Of Doom that bequeaths several, devastating magical abilities - and despite being defeated on several occasions by quintessentially the same guy - he's actually been more successful in world domination than Robotnik.

Basically, Ganondorf with the Eggman Army or Fleet, knowledge of a space colony that he can Colony Drop at pretty much anytime, plus Seven Emeralds that give you superpowers when collected.

BTW, since "Boom" is a whole universe of it's own thing, what chance do we have of seeing Ristar cameo?

Radical Rex for Smash Bros 4!

On a more relevant note, I didn't know SATAM was hated. Everywhere I've seen it brought up, it's put on a pedestal and worshipped as the best thing Sonic ever did.

I also found this article which discusses the image problem Sonic has had in recent years. I think it's an interesting read.

@darkabomination:

Uh, dude do the names Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks, Misfits, the Ramones, the Cramps, the Clash, Dead Kennedys, Nofx, etc ring a bell? Sonic had nothing to do with punk, or any other influence to musical genres as far as I know. Besides, he caught on with kids and preteens, not a demographic that could influence punk much.

The "first wave" punk bands in the 70's and 80's were only niche successes. The punk niche was an underground subculture at the time that was only a blip on the general public's radar at most.

The "second wave" punk bands in the 90's and 2000's, on the other hand, were mainstream successes, to the consternation of the established punk niche. And the punk-like Sonic debuted in the 90's, so there has to be some connection.

I don't think it's that specific. Sonic was just designed to be cool and a little edgy while still being kid friendly. People like Bugs Bunny for similar reasons, or Han Solo, or any heroic character with a little edge to them, who isn't squeaky clean compared to the competition, like Mario or Mikey Mouse.

[up]But the rebellious attitude (to the established clean-cut heroes) and the mohawk (which was edited in by Sega of America) are definite punk qualities. The only thing that was missing is fighting an Obstructive Bureaucrat in a suit.

Satam isn't that hated, you're suffering from internet filter that makes it look more unpopular than it was. It's very dated due to Totally Radical at play and newer fans have a harder time getting into it due the era difference(remember sonic back then didn't have all that much of an established universe in the games). It gets less flack than Sonic X from what I've seen.

That's because X takes place in a fictional Japan-like setting which also spends more time on the human sidekicks than the actual problems at times, but IMHO, it's balanced.

Sat AM is just more Totally Radical than any other Sonic show.

Japan-like? Pretty sure that was supposed to be America, with the Mexican maid and all(which was pretty lame on the writers' part).

Sonic X is looked at a bit more fondly due to coming out around when the Newbie Boom was at it's height, came out the same year as the Battle port of Sonic Adventure 2 if I recall.

Neither SATAM or X are really hated per se, people are just older and more aware of their flaws than before.

From what I've seen, it's kinda split down the middle. It has its detractors and it has its bizarrely hardcore fans with 5000 fanfics about Cosmo and Tails.

The only thing people truly hate about Sonic X is the 4kids Dub and Chris. Other than that, it ranges from mediocre to apathy among the fandom.

Never understood why Chris was such a show stealer.

"Listen, I just realized, our target audience are human kids, not hedgehogs! We gotta make a central human character!"

The show was pretty average otherwise. Not helped by the editing hackjobs.

Oh, I was mocking the writers who decided that, not the audience.

And Tails and Cosmo was pretty cute and sad, but why does the internet need to make so many fanfictions of everything?

I suppose the human mind is never pleased.
