[up][up][up]My problem with that is it makes Sonic more or less redundant. Why play as him when you have these two that have most of his perks plus can access areas and scores that he can't? The shields were something but even then faded compared to flying and gliding/climbing (not to mention the latter moves didn't deactivate when you got hit or entered a new level).

Knuckles' only big weakness was his poor jumping, and there were only a few places that became a real hinderance. Otherwise him and Tails were basically the same as the main character, only better. Cream is basically this to Tails as well. I think Amy was an improvement, since there was better balance of strengths and weaknesses, and also a real difference in handling that gave some interest in playing as the different assortment.

My ideal of having multiple playable characters in a Sonic game is each of them having alternate paths, and different abilities, but ultimately, all characters have the same core gameplay. Sonic 3 And Knuckles represents this ideal to me (part of why I believe it's Sonic Team's Magnum Opus).

Eh, I'm not as into S3nK as most people seem to be. Maybe it's because I never played it as a kid (at least, not as a little kid), but I feel like its collection of levels just total up to okay at best and mediocre at worst. It's very middle-of-the-road for me, especially since the pace in general seems to be slower than other sidescrolling Sonic games, which doesn't mesh well for me with a game with speed as its main draw.

The music is freaking amazing, some of the best in the series, but the game as a whole...it's fine enough I guess. Knux is cool.

EDIT: Also, the special stages...meh. Sonic 2's has always been my favorite anyway.

As much as people hate the homing attack in 2D games, I think gives much better moderation of the cast abilities and gives Sonic at least some edge the others don't. Not to mention it's similarly one of those abilities if manipulated right can be used to find loads of easter eggs and pathways (if Sonic 4 has mostly only done so via "Bubbles chains" so far).

Alternatively Sonic's shield abilities would be a lot better if he had some sort of way of preserving and managing them, sort of like Mighty in the Megamix hack.

I dislike all the special stages this series has ever had. I dislike Sonic 2's special stages less than I dislike the others, but I utterly despise Sonic 1's. Sonic 3's are... boring, but at least they're doable.

Sonic 1 is my favorite as well. Also, Sonic Heroes was actually pretty fun. Blue Sphere isn't bad, but too easy to screw up. Sonic 2's aren't bad either, but not that fun.

I utterly loathe Sonic Heroes special stages. I have no idea why, but I could never get those damn Chaos Emeralds. So I was screwed of my finale after spending a month beating the game and the nightmare that was the last few Team Dark levels.

...Does anyone else think that future games should bring back the special stages, but have it so that each Emerald gets a reward? Not just Super for all Seven? Like, maybe power ups based on emerald collection, or maybe Chaos Control or something?

And even though there easy, I like the Genesis 3d Blast special stages the most. Something about the design and the cheery music give you a feeling of hey, take your time and relax. You've got plenty of opportunities to get them all. Especially being Breather Levels compared to some of the others which bordered on Nintendo Hard at times trying to get the Flickies wen everything else was against you, even the Flickies!

Maybe for each emerald, you get 5 seconds of Chaos power, which you can use to run fast and phase through enemies or something. Basically, a nerfed version of super Sonic.

Well, Shadow the Hedgehog gave some ideas for Chaos powers. Maybe we could capitalize on that depending the Emerald or maybe a character could get an ability for picking up an Emerald as is?(like the Chips in Sonic 2006, those were kind of neat to have for upgrading)

In general, I'd prefer Sonic to have the best acceleration and top speed in 2D, as well as his signature classic abilities like the Peel Out, the Spindash, and the Insta-shield. His modern stuff like walljumping and Boost and Homing Attack are pretty handy too. Tails should have a mix of classic platforming mixed with the metroidvania Adventure stuff from Poloy Island (plus the classic doggy-paddle when swimming), and Knuckles has better braking, glides and climbs, and can swim Adventure style.

For Chaos Emerald Awards, it should tie into gameplay... Sonic and Shadow can have some kind of power gauge (Chaos Energy gauge?), earning Emeralds extends the gauge significantly.

Didn't Sonic Advance 2 have Sonic able to Insta-Shield and homing attack? Why couldn't we have that in 3D?
[up]The Insta-shield would be useless in 3D. And I didn't like that setup in Advance 2, since there were times I wanted to attack with the Insta-Shield but I used the Homing Attack instead.

[up] They were never antagonists. In SA 2, Shadow and Rouge were playable characters, and saved the world. Rouge was a government agent, and was arguably on the side of the heroes the entire time. In Sonic Heroes, Team Dark were playable from the beginning, and they were as opposed to Eggman/Metal Sonic as the other teams.
@unnoun: And if I remember correctly, it was usually more a hinderance anyway since the homing attack in that game had such a poor distance ratio, and didn't even work on bosses where they could have at least had some valid use (seriously, Cream was allowed to use her super cheap Chao on them but not Sonic, which would have least required some strategy landing and positioning).

I personally think Shadow and Rouge were uses of archetypes the team didn't have a full understanding of and were trying to 'have their cake and eat it too'. They have vague leanings of a Jerk Sue, a guy with extreme moral ambiguity but can suddenly change into a cherished hero whenever appropriate (Sonic X where Shadow switches from a remorseless child beater/murderer to another benevolent team mate is probably the best example of this). It may have worked if they had kept them just for SA 2, but now they try to give them a role in every main title, to often uneasy effect.
