General Sonic The Hedgehog thread

Ok, so first off, you need to chill out, its a fictional series. Secondly, the sarcastic tone isn't really going to help your case.

I didn't read your post because I'm on a phone.

I finally got around to reading it, and while it's a fine premise, I've longed since stopped trying to care about these characters in the game's due to neglect.

They're better outside the games anyway.

Because ever since Rush came out, Cream stopped being viewed as "Amy's sidekick" and fans instead started associating Cream with Blaze more than anything. Like, compare the amount of fanart and fics you see of Amy and Cream to that of Blaze and Cream. There's a lot more of the latter than the former and I can only blame Rush for making Cream Blaze's partner in that game and being the catalyst for Blaze's Character Development. Of course, I wouldn't mind Cream being friends with more than just Amy, but people got the idea that Cream is Blaze's sidekick even though Cream is supposed to that for Amy and it just stings. As I said, we might as well have Tails become best friends with Silver. Imagine how fans of Tails' friendship with Sonic would take to that

Doesn't help that SEGA seems to be rolling with it now. In Generations, Cream was hanging out with Blaze in the first cutscene and was on the rock with Blaze and Silver, meanwhile she never so much as shared eye-contact with Amy. And while I guess there haven't been any significant interactions since then, screenshots often group Cream with Blaze. And now SEGA seems to be including Sticks into the franchise and making sure to specify her close relationship with Amy... While that may not be Rush's fault, it's hard not to see Rush as the catalyst that shattered Amy and Cream's friendship. I also find Rush to be fairly overrated in gameplay and story, so I'm not hesitating to dump dislike on it

OH! My most serious apologies about that... I was not aware that you feel that way about all the characters, which I can understand. And I'll try to quit it with the scathing sarcasm

I just can't help but get frustrated with apathy towards Cream since it's honestly harming her character. It was beyond irritating when Cream was being utilized in a very insulting manner in the comics only for the majority of people to go "Meh" (meanwhile literally any other character getting the same treatment would invoke massive fan outrage that puts an end to that insulting treatment) and, while not as bad as hatred, apathy won't convince SEGA to have Cream appear again, let alone be significant

I know, Cream's a fictional character, I shouldn't be worked up about this. But I'm very big on characters and their potential and I see great potential in Cream's character; seeing that go to waste because people don't want to give her a chance is very rage-inducing for me. Not to say that everyone should start liking Cream regardless of their opinion, just that it'd be nice if I wasn't alone in advocating for Cream to be utilized again, preferably with respect, and not glossing over her potential retirement. Like, I've come to seriously dislike Blaze lately, but I would speak up in her favor if SEGA started treating her like crap and/or decided to retire her. Likewise, I don't really care about Mighty and Ray, but I am in support of their return since I see good potential for them (Not trying to justify my poor attitude, just explaining my side of the story...)

I'm not so sure why, in a platforming series with loads and loads of characters, a single character not being especially interesting on their own should be believable as the reason for the developers to can them from the series.

Even outside of the platforming genre, video game series don't particularly have much need to ensure that all of their minor recurring characters are engagingly written, because they're mostly there to be incidental supporters with at best a few lines in the entire game: hence Mario's general use of its wide supporting cast as one-linery NPCs, for example.

If I compared the pics, I've personally seen...it would be an even split.

Sonic fans are a lot more overzealous about their characters than other series I notice.

Look, it's nice that you like Cream so much and see so much potential in her, but look at things from a bigger perspective. There are so many other characters getting neglected right now, and a lot of them have way bigger points of popularity than Cream.

Cream was never really a popular character to begin with, she was just there to a lot of people because when she was at her most prominent, she still didn't do a whole lot. So excuse people for not exactly showing her the same love and care compared to say, Shadow or Blaze, characters whom have had larger roles and more developed characters, compared to one who barely has any of that.

Cream has more love in the handheld division of games than the home console division so perhaps this may relate to Sonic on handheld not being that big anymore.

Are you trying to say Dimps should go back to making original Sonic games on handhelds?

I'd certainly trust them more than Sonic Team, at this point.

Eh, I'd say Dimps' "best"* days are behind them as well. What have they even done recently?

*I honestly don't think Sonic Rush is that great, and Sonic Advance 3 is just ass.

I honestly thought that potholed to Forces and got confused.

Too bad we never got a Satam game it would have been epic.

Actually, now that you mention it...

Keep in mind, this isn't footage from an actual Sat AM protype. What it is is a mockup of a pitch that was made for a Sat Am game back in the early 90's, back when it was The Thing. (TM) For better or worse, it never made it past the planning stages, but this is still a pretty decent idea of what we would've got. Whether or it not would have been a decent Sonic game is a different story.

The Sonic games aren't big on story, so a lot of the characters just aren't given much to do. It's harder to fit all these characters into a game where they all get screentime in story, especially one that's on light on plot as Sonic. Cream got time to shine in the comics, thought. The same can be said of a lot of the characters who also get sidelined in the games. Knuckles started out as a rival for Sonic, but that quickly disappeared. Now the only time we see Knux in the games is when he acts as a sidekick to Sonic. Compare that to when he was given his own comic, complete with it's own supporting cast, years before the Echidna backstory of Sonic Adventure was a thing.

This is purely due to SEGA's refusal to give games to other characters, Knuckles should get his own game and it should be called:

"Sonic the Hedgehog & Knuckles"

Sega gave a game to Knuckles. But it was only due to the fact they didn't want the Chaotix connected to Sonic in-case it flopped. It did... okay, instead.

Also, Tails and Shadow have their own games. This is ignoring official Flash games starring other characters, mind you.

As for Sonic not being big on story, this isn't entirely true. The 3D games have had a lot more story than many of the 2D platformers, and Sonic Battle is a huge story-driven game(to the point of it being a downside sometimes). However, the story-based games have also had a lot of backlash too due to too many characters that play the way people aren't interested in, hence them going for simpler plots and making it Sonic only. Forces is more of an outlier at this point in the latest era that started since Unleashed(to clarify, the Dreamcast Era included all the GBA games, Rushes, Rivals, Adventures, Heroes, Shadow, and 06. Despite 06 not being on a similar system, it finished off the main story).

So, in those shots that showed some of the game's crew, did any of them look visibly uncomfortable to you guys?

(I ask because of that whole "production for the game's engine took 3 years, but production for the game itself took like a year" thing that was talked about a few pages back.)

You got that backwards, it's the engine that took 1 year, the game that took 3.

Not according to this.

i'm kinda surprised they never touched on the whole "the most of the credits is made up of entirely new faces to the game design scene" thing that's kinda a big deal

not that it's much of an excuse for the game

I remember Sonic Adventure 1&2 being well loved by everyone. When did people turn against the Sonic Adventure games ?

Sonic 06 came out and it kinda just snowballed from there. Doesn't help that they show their age more and more every generation.
