Just to switch gears, I've taken a bit of a break from my Archie binge thanks to the reboot, (again, Ken Penders can go to hell,) so in the meantime, I've been reading Sonic The Comic, and it's actually pretty good. Mostly. Like the Archie comic, it takes a while to find itself, though once it does, it's kickass fun action all the way, and the characters are pretty likeable too. Like Archie and Sat Am, it does have have its' fair share of non-game characters, but also like Archie and Sat Am, there were literally only three characters in the actual games at the time, so what were they supposed to do?

The most striking thing about the comic is how accurate to the games it is, at least in terms of setting. Long before Archie pulled a Crisis, Sonic The Comic was already doing its' best to have its' world resemble the games as closely as possible. Just about every zone from the early games showed up, and they all looked more or less how they did in the games, checker square patterns and all. Beyond that, a number of other little things are close too; there are only seven Chaos Emeralds instead of a shit-ton of them, rings are simply a thing that exist, there are Star Gates that transport you to Special Zones, etc. Hell, even extra lives are a thing, boxes and all. (Which leads into one of the most bizzare Big Lipped Alligator Moments I've ever seen, so the less said about that the better.)

That said, the comic still has it's own twists and turns. Two of the biggest are probably Super Sonic and Robotnik's origins. Robotnik actually used to be a kindly scientist and friend of Sonic's who was turned evil by the Chaos Emeralds in an experiment gone wrong, whereas Sonic was also affected by the Chaos Emeralds and gained a Superpowered Evil Side, Super Sonic. The interesting thing about this Super Sonic is that it isn't an instant get-out-of-jail-free card. On the one hand, Super Sonic can pound Robotnik flat, but on the other, he's just as liable to beat Robotnik as he is to blow up the moon. Oh, and as mentioned, Robotnik takes over in #8 by sending Sonic 6 months ahead into the future, giving him enough time to conquer the whole planet. The result is a Sonic series that is entirely its' own, one that uses the setting of the games as a base, but with a plot better resembling Sat Am, with Sonic and his own band of Freedom Fighters fighting to take back Mobius from Robotnik. All of this would be well and good, but there's still one thing that holds it back: Sonic, the Fastest Jerkass Alive. (TM)

Let's not sugarcoat this here. UK!Sonic is nothing short of a bloody asshole. Now on the one hand, he's not completely irredeemable. He does still care about saving innocents, and if his friends are in trouble, he'll always get them out of a jam. That said, he'll do so while running his mouth off on how saving them is such a waste of time and all they're doing is just being an inconvenience to him, and while he may not fully mean it, it doesn't change the fact that he's still saying it to their respective faces. He also calls everyone a 'Pixil Brain', even Tails, and treats them like dirt whenever he is and isn't saving their hides. Being a hedgehog with an attitude is one thing, but there's having an attitude and then there's being an unmitigated ass, which UK!Sonic is to the hilt. He also doesn't have as much of Sonic's usual charm or charisma, which tends to help offset other incarnation's less admirable traits. And while UK!Sonic has some of that, it's not enough to make up for his asshat tendencies. I still like the comic fine, mainly because it's still fun and I like everyone else, (I actually think I like it more than whatever Archie was doing at the time,) but it doesn't change the fact that UK!Sonic is a total twat.

It's like guys like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and the like were able find decent jobs after college and settled into something good, while Sonic been hopping from menial job to menial job trying to find a permanent place.
I know it wasn't intended as such, but this analogy was a serious punch to the gut for me because of my own life situation >__<

[up]They could barely go a couple of panels without talking about how much they absolutely loathe Charmy. It doesn't sound like much - and I can't blame them that much - but it gets grating after a while.

Also, there was that time when Charmy called in some of his bee friends to rescue the Chaotix from a band of Fantastic Four knock-offs, only for Vector to complain that their method (turning the bad guys into a vase) was stupid.

I still find it interesting that characters that showed up once and were either brushed aside or took longer to show up again in the official canon were immediately snatched up by the comics and made characters. Seeing Amy in her old design is particularly weird. The two very early manga series she first showed up in are downright weird.

Amy's quite miraculous, she's an OC character from a gag manga the designers seemed to have liked enough to make her in Sonic CD, and would've been a one-off if not for being in several spinoffs in the 90s. Then became a main character in Adventure with a redesign.

With the loss of the Archie OCs (donutsteel), Ian got creative in digging out all the Sonic Multiverse characters from the other games and cartoons.

Speaking of Archie, remember when I said about a couple of weeks back that someone was modding a bunch of Archie characters into Sonic World? Well, LOOKIT:

That's Sally, Antoine, Bunny, Rotor, Nicole, Mina Mongoose, Scourge, Julie-Su, Dr.Finetivus, Fiona Fox, Locke, Shard, and Eclipse in the flesh, and he ain't done. Lein-da, Geoffery St.John, and Breezy are still coming, with more besides. So that's 16+ Archie characters when the pack comes out. If you're an Archie fan, this is a freaking field day.grin

Nah, the SATAM characters are still around. SEGA just nixed all the Archie-only exclusive characters, especially the ones created by Ken Penders.

[up][up]Sort of. Archie stole it's basic plot and original cast from Sat Am, but like Archie's own TMNT comic before it, it eventually started going in a different direction with its' own cast of characters, many of which were created by Ken Penders. Now, Penders was a fucking hack, but he still had a hell of an influence on the comic, and a lot of the characters that Flynn took and fleshed out prior to the reboot still come from him. However, Penders eventually started to think of himself as an auteur, with seeing how Sonic Chronicles more or less refurbished his Echidna mythos not helping matters. Cue the lawsuit, Penders winning, SEGA outlawing nearly all Archie characters pre-Flynn in fear of this ever happening again, and Flynn having to get ridiculously creative to avoid having to start over. Which is actually what he wanted to do in the first place before SEGA and Archie nixed it. Not sure if that would have been for the better or the worse.

But the UK comic (which is actually the Fleetway comic if you want to get technical,) is a whole other kettle of fish, with its' own gaggle of characters that as far as I know have not had any lawsuits applied to. It's also kind-of sort-of still going with its' own online continuation, though it doesn't get updated much these days.

And yeah, Archie had the Pink Sally. Penders actually tried to explain this well over 70 or so issues into the comics' run (and in his own Knuckles comic no less,) by saying she fell into a chemical bath and had to spend ages scrubbing it out of her fur, rather than just chalking it up to Early-Installment Weirdness and letting it be. Did I mention Penders was a hack?

He did create that amazing Side-B story snippet (Star Gazing) of Nicolle creating her Lynx avatar very briefly for the first time ever tho.

Even Dan Drazen loved that one snip, and Ian revisited the theme of that story post-Genesis Wave.

EDIT: Scratch that, it was written and drawn by Tania del Rio.

I came across an old Sonic fansite archive that was made before Adventure's American localization when basics of the plot were known but nothing specific, and the board was full of complaints that this Tikal chick was a ripoff from the comics and most people considered the comics the main canon when it came to setting and plot. How times have changed.

Also they were oddly insistant that the game after Adventure in 1999 would be an RPG for PC and Dreamcast.
