Yes. 'Twas hilarious.

Grumps playing through it reminded me of one thing: the "adventure fields" are sort of unnecessarily large and have a bit much of running back and forth. And not much to do apart from that.

Like, having to look for the Ice Key in the city, then carry it to Mystic Ruins. Because it totally makes sense that the Ice Key is just in some back alley no one would even notice unless they were looking for it!

[up][up][up]Why do ask?

[up]That back alley is literally the only thing in that area besides Casinopolis and and 2nd entrance to the station. Not the best example.

The poor camera controls don't help either.

Anyhow, I did enjoy the game myself. But it has it's flaws, but those are due the game being made, at its time, completely new tech.

That and it was very ambitious, trying to tackle multiple genres and styles in one game.

Though who the hell thought adding a mandatory fishing minigame was a good idea??? Yes yes, you wanted Sonic Adventure to showcase the dumb fishing rod controller, because fast paced action and fishing go together so well.

Sonic Adventure was a decent game IMO, and somewhat holds up today. It blew my mind back in 1999. the Adventure Fields were shit though.

A lot of the hate comes from how mediocre a lot of Sonic games are nowadays, and it started a huge bandwagon of "Sonic has always been bad". It has its flaws, but its not 06.

Arin just has a huge personal bias against Sonic (I mean, he claims every damn game they've played has sucked) and combine that with the fact that he kinda...sucks at them.

Just asking out of curiosity. I was watching it as it was coming out and then tonight I watched a three hour compilation of the whole playthrough.

I've always been a Big the Cat apologist, but having seen his gameplay I totally get it now. I have read that there's a thing that you need to do to hook Froggy, and also that the Dreamcast version was designed for the system's fishing rod peripheral and it got butchered during the port.

I never grew up with SA, so the thing looked like a jank fest to me. It really does give off Sonic 06 vibes - nothing to be ashamed of necessarily, they both look fun in their own way. I'd play it if I had the means.

I'm kinda disillusioned with 3D Sonic, having seen the worst of Adventure and given up on Heroes due to the jank, but I'm generally down with Unleashed/Black Knight Sonic still. And I still want to play 06.

The only thing that could have saved the Big sections, is if every time he lost Froggy, he would say I OUTTA BREAK A BROOM HANDLE OFF IN YOUR ASS

Apparently Big's a lore guy in Sonic Chronicles. There was room to save him, with less of a derpy voice and some plot significance outside of a fishing boss fight, but I get why people are against him.

...I kinda want Cream to come back.

Cream atleast is a complete Game-Breaker in Advance 3 and Battle.

That works both for and against her.

Anyhow, I enjoy Sonic's, Tails' and surprisingly Gamma's action stages in Adventure.

Knuckles' are bearable, but not very enjoyable.

Amy's are just kind of dull.

Fuck Big. Just fuck his segment with his own damn fishing pole.

[up]Big has proven has proven that he could fight disturbingly well with his fishing rod in Sonic Heroes too (although I think the fact that it's a rod and the guy is still chasing after Froggy is what annoys people).

Cream can fight disturbingly well for her age and temperament. You just do not see it in games like say Sonic Rush (although Tails doesn't fight in that game either....)

Y'know, if I'm honest? I really liked the Adventure Stages. Well, more Mystic Ruins and Egg Carrier than Station Square, but either way, they let me dick around with the physics without the pressure of time limits or being unable to return to my former location without a restart of the stage.

And I still want to play 06.
You sure about that?

[up]Same here. And with even Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3 and K, and SA 2.

Though I played SA 1 after playing those games (well...except for the one time I played DX at my second cousin's house while at a party).

Though, for a while, my friend always looked at the side of SADX's case and kept asking "What kind of game is this, Sonic DX?" Literally having to correct him and say that it's a port of SA 1. Though my dad saying "Sonic 2 Adventure Battle" seems to make me think that the logos for the Adventure games can confuse people.

So I finally got my hands on Sonic Runners a couple days ago, and I'm very much enjoying it - though apparently that's not a popular opinion these days. On the one hand, it's very Sonic Advance 2-esque in how much it relies on sudden, high speed reactions for its difficulty, even though its a bunch of randomly arranged setpieces, but it's somewhat more forgivable here than it was there due to being a phone game and all.

As another downside, lag. Ugh.

After extensively playing Dash, Jump and Runners, I definitely think that should there ever be a Generations 2, a stage referencing all three at once would be a decent idea.

Likewise. Adventure 1 was solid in its own right. Glitchy, but sometimes those were fun. Nearly have every Emblem in the Gamecube remake too.

I mean, I played it around the time it was released on the Game Cube and couldn't understand how to progress, and subsequently put it down for years in frustration. Then when I finally picked it back up again, not really remembering much of the game, I was constantly frustrated by the terrible camera, which literally caused me to lose the Egg Viper fight like 9 times.

I don't think it's a bad game in which to have fun and screw around, but I feel like it's too buggy to play and take seriously to any degree, and whatever extra content there is just isn't worth it. As for the Chao Garden, I have never felt the need to raise a Chao.

You missed out. Chao are awesome.

I notice modern gamers cannot deal with camera jank, like at all. Dare I say, but camera jank was almost the norm among earlier 3D platformers. You were actually fortunate to get a platformer with consistently good camera and you just sort of had to deal with it,

Today it's generally expected that the game caters to the player more and more. There's good and bad in this.

Mario 64 and OOT come to mind.

I hear that todays games are easier than the ones we had back then. So I guess younger gamers are used to things being easier for them.

[up][up]Those cameras were still pretty bad apparently. Mario 64 camera's problem was that you had to keep switching between manual and automatic...because each area is just like dat.

Sonic Adventure's camera kept switching to automatic all the time so controlling it is only very slight pained in the sin.

I played Sonic advance 3 today for the first time in about 2 years and wow the game still holds up nicely! The sprite work in the advance games is superb and the levels are quite complex! The soundtrack is awesome considering the GBA hardware(one of the best boss themes in the series IMO) and the bosses are among the best in the franchise. I do wish Gemerl would show up again...my only gripe is that the hit collision kind of sucks regarding crush kills which makes Ocean Base especially a pain. But overall the game is among the best handheld sonics and pretty underrated IMO.

The twinkle snow boss is ughghhghh though. Cyber Track boss is hard too but pretty crazy once he turns red. Chaos Angel has got to be one of the best looking levels in any 2d sonic ever, and is a very nice change of pace from the usual dreary factory final levels.

I'm watching a playthrough of advance 1 right now, and you can tell DIM Ps was getting their feel for sonic still, most of the levels hardly look sonic-like aesthetically and the bosses are relatively simple. The snow level's first act has wonderful music though. The rocket level was pretty impressive too.

  • Uh, no, I don't feel I missed out at all. I gave it more than enough of a fair shake, but I just couldn't care. If I wanted to basically take care of a Tamagotchi, I'd play the Game Boy Tamagotchi game. I like its music better anyway.

  • What's this talk about "modern gamers" and 3-D platformers? I've been gaming since before 3-D platformers were ever even a thing. Camera control has been an issue in those kinds of games since their beginning, and it still hasn't been perfected in most games. It's a legitimate issue that messes with the precision and control that you NEED to have. Camera jank unfairly robs you of victory, causing deaths that could have been avoided if the camera would work in a way that makes sense.

Camera jank can definitely be a dealbreaker in older games. I can't speak from experience with Bubsy 3D, but apparently that's one of the myriads of reasons people hate that game. Meanwhile Mario was doing fairly decently with the camera. Spyro did well with it's camera, and games like Crash got by with a fixed camera.

It doesn't matter in the end. Sonic Adventure was the first real 3D Sonic game and it tried a lot of good things, to mixed/positive reception. It looks pretty damn good for 64 bits in the late 90's - it blows Play Station and N64 out of the water in lots of ways.
