Backstory: In my Urban Fantasy universe, where you have a fairly standard Masquerade setting, magic is an innate, hereditary ability, which means you have mages and non-mages and that's it. In the late nineteenth century, there was a kind of magical Cold War which was mainly constrained to political manoeuvring but did have a couple of real battles. Anyway, nothing too serious, but it was the first major conflict where there were large numbers of non-mage combatants involved, and although on a large scale they came in useful for their respective sides a lot of them predictably ended up getting slaughtered by mages who would always have the advantage of them. After this an organisation grew up for non-mages who were aware of and involved in the magical society, to make it harder for mages to fuck with them. Over the next few decades it got to have quite a lot of political weight, mostly by virtue of size, good leadership, and being very well organised. Said organisation is now based mainly in America, probably New York, since Chicago is something of a magical hotspot.

I need a name for said organisation.

So they're (at least somewhat) opposed to mages, right? How about calling them something like "The Hopkins Society"?

Too antagonistic. They don't want to piss off the mages; they're basically just another political group, so they're quite happily in alliance with some of them.

Just curious: is this an Alternate History in The Unmasqued World? Also, is there a term for non-mages?

For names: Society for the Protection of Mundanes, or SPM for short (I don't want to use the term "normals" because that makes it sound like mages are freaks, and, as you mentioned, they don't want that). Maybe Organisation of Non-magical Beings (ONB).

Something like that could work, yeah, thanks.

It's not an unmasqued world; it's in theory Real Life. There's a small number of non-mages who know about the magical society mostly through having relationships of various kinds with mages (I haven't bothered to come up with any actual genetics for it because I'd almost certainly get it wrong, but it's possible for two mages to have a non-magical kid, and if only one parent is a mage that becomes even more likely) although I have a character who hires two non-mages who are completely oblivious to the existence of the supernatural as personal assistants, because she doesn't want anyone with prior political allegiances.

Anyway, the point being, this is not an unmasked society. If it was, it wouldn't be the non-mages needing protection.
