Electronic Arts has announced that it has officially pulled the plug on Mirror’s Edge 2, stopping development of the project after early prototypes were deemed to be disappointing.

Electronic Arts’ Patrick Soderlund said that the Mirror’s Edge series was “close to his heart”, but poor sales did not help matters.

According to Press 2 Play, DICE showed Electronic Arts a prototype, and EA was not pleased.

“EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance. The project has been stopped – involved parties at DICE are working on something else now.”

Back in 2008, Electronic Arts declared that they had “big plans” for Mirror’s Edge, and were planning for sequels beyond the planned trilogy – before the game had even been released.

Here's an excerpt from back in 2008 before the game was released:

"Electronic Arts has big plans for Mirror’s Edge. They’ve already announced it would be the first in a trilogy, like Mass Effect and Too Human, and are already talking about sequels beyond the initial three games."

Hilarious in Hindsight or Harsher in Hindsight?

... well, that Too Human bit is hysterical, anyway.

In honor of Mirrors Edge, here's the now-ironic theme song, "Still Alive".

It's been 3 1/2 years since it was released.

And I think DICE is occupied with the Battlefield series these days...

Patrick Söderlund said this in January:

EA has not forgotten the 'Mirror's Edge ".

- We have not put it in landfills. The schemer on "Mirror's Edge," absolutely, "says EA boss Patrick Soderlund.

In an extensive interview with Aftonbladet Play! select Patrick Soderlund his words carefully when he talks about the future of the unique platform game "Mirror's Edge".

The game won Aftonbladet reader price Gold Stick in the category "Newcomer of the Year" and after a sluggish start, it slowly but surely come to sell in more than two million copies.

- "Mirror's Edge" as a brand has enormous strength. The character Faith is an icon and that is something EA actually lack. If you look at EA's brands, we have almost no character based games. We are not Lara Croft or Super Mario in our portfolio. So there is definitely an appetite with EA to make more 'Mirror's Edge ". We have not put the brand at the dump. The schemer on "Mirror's Edge," absolutely, "said Patrick Söderlund.

But it is not only female character that makes Faith "Mirror's Edge" unique. It is also seen that the platform first-person. Söderlund agree that it is also important for the series to come.

''- Third Person-Faith works just fine. But we believe that some of its "edge" disappears when you remove förstapersonsvyn. What we rather need to do is to solve what was frustrating to förstapersonsvyn in "Mirror's Edge," which is very difficult. But we can do that, then we have truly succeeded. We are still convinced that it is possible to do that type of game, but we can do it a lot better. "I work continuously"''

This sounds very much like a confirmation that a sequel is indeed in development.

But it does not want Patrick Soderlund subscribe to.

- I can say that we are working continuously to reflect on how we should take the brand further. Where do we stand today. I can not confirm that we do "Mirror's Edge 2." But it is a brand that requires thought and I think it's worth continuing to work with it.

What happened?

The prototypes stunk.

And frankly, if you still are going with prototypes 3 1/2 years later....

Aw. Franchise Killer in effect. I might actually play it now (is it for the 360?) just to see if it's as bad as people say it is.

It's sort of Bait-and-Switch. The first level is Le Parkour... then you hit the sewers...

The sewers had heaps of Le Parkour. I thought it was the boat yard that everyone hated.

I'm a little disappointed but not too upset. I have Mirror's Edge, and while I haven't beat it (very close), I really enjoyed it. It was a great experiment and I like that a game like it along with all the generic (and not-so generic) shooters ect.

Maybe this will get me to finish the game.

Good riddance. Designers with no respect for people who get motion sickness don't deserve my respect.

^^ How bad was the motion sickness? I mean, hell, I get a bit woozy after 30 minutes of Metroid Prime...

If Metroid Prime makes you woozy, I would strongly suggest staying away from Mirrors Edge. My mind rolls in circles any time I remember the stuff in ME. (I don't get motion sickness though; my mind is just not very good at thinking in 3D)

I have Mirror's Edge and it never made me woozy in the slightest.

Also, this is a pretty big disappointment. Mirror's Edge is an awesome game and I think it has a lot of potential for sequels.

[up][up]Different people have different physiologies. It's not surprising. The real problem is that a large fraction of the game industry doesn't seem to care that they're losing customers to medical problems. It's not like motion sickness is rare. It's actually the standard in some Asian countries (hint hint failure of FPS's in Japan).

This really....I can't even begin to describe how I feel. I got really attached to that game. I'm still keeping hope that one will be made.

I heard that the iOS remake was pretty good. Haven't tried it myself, though.

That's unfortunate. I thought the first game was well executed, and the concept itself was interesting.

the iOS remake is amazing. But it still doesn't beat the FPS view of the original...

@Clarste: They do have Seizure and Motion Sickness warnings for games. I can see what you mean, though.

Still, the best solution really is just to stay away.
