How would one react to such a situation?:

Insert witty title here
Forgive me for bothering you. I might make a megathread for doubts in my novel. The novel is set in a steampunkish world with lots of fantastic racism. And I'm sorry for the grammar, English isn't my first language.

1) Boy Meets Girl during vacations. Boy (simon) and girl (Luna) promise to exchange letters. Boy kicks the bucket before he can answer the first letter he gets from girl. Boy's best friend (Leon) decides pretending to be him.

When Luna sends "Simon"a letter saying she's visiting him soon, Leon has a massive freak out and writes her explaining her everything. Sadly, the letter doesn't arrive, and Luna goes visit him, anyway.

Leon's close friend Julian finds her (he knows how she looks like because she's fairly famous) before Leon does and tells her what happened. Luna might be my character, but how the hell would one react to find that one out? Insist the Julian is lying and tell him to fuck off? Start sobbing madly? Luna has an abysmal self-steem and is extremelly self-concious but is fairly kind forgiving.

2) Also, I had the crack idea of writing a story in which such a situation happens in the real world. Characters would be completely different. E-mails and forums would be involved.

As in, boy and girl meet (during an anime event). They start changing e-mails. Girl dies, her starts pretending to be her. Then he find out what happened and it's not please. Would such a story be ridiculous?

Once again, forgive me for bothering you with two freaking questions.

So what exactly does happen? If someone recognized a person I knew who had gotten lost I'd be thrilled.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. The girl gets lost in town, trying to get to where Simon is staying. He recognizes her because her sisters are fairly well known.

Why is Leon pretending to be Simon in the first place? I can imagine the girl would be pretty upset and Leon would have a lot to answer for.

Simon got killed in a duel because he decided defending Leon's honor (Leon got accused of being a mage in a world plagued by Fantastic Racism). Thing is, he's really a mage.

Leon also blames himself for not being around when his older sister died. But if the whole idea is stupid, I can just scrap it.

The stuff with the magic is most likely just window dressing. The stuff involving the relationship does sound unlikely.

I should scrap it, then?

Yeah, probably. Start from the beginning with something a little more logical, like having the boy die in his best friend's arms while telling him to "Take care of her while I'm away".

Like the boy falling ill and as he dies, telling him to take care of her? Him pretending to be her should be scrapped?

You can probably have echoes of it, like the friend takes on the boy's personae to make her feel more comfortable but after a while, the real him starts coming through.

Only signing the letters as him? Is in, Simon dies of an illness, Leon promises to take care of Luna and starts sending her letters, signing as Simon. Then Luna goes visit "Simon" as a surprise and learns Simon has been dead for an year.

And the magic part should be scrapped, right? Maybe I should write the 2) version instead, then?

Yeah, that first paragraph actually sounds like something that could happen in the real world. It also sounds more Romantic to me. XD

With or without e-mails and anime events? Or maybe the protagonist just went to school with both people, but was closer to the one who died. Moved away and... Well.

Male or female protagonist, I wonder?

It could be either gender, though two guys might be more interesting. Then again, I'm the sort of guy who finds putting girls into positions boys usually find themselves in far more interesting.

Thanks! Maybe they met during vacations, studied together or something.

I would still like to use something like that in Luna's backstory, though. Maybe she used to be in a long distance relationship (or maybe just friendship) with a boy, but he dies and his best friend makes him promise him to take care of her? That would lead to a love triangle (with Luna going to the spirit world later on an all) and I kind of don't want that XD.

And thanks so much for your help. Forgive me for bothering you.

Sounds like a solid plan. And don't bother worrying about wasting our time: We're wasting it just being online. XD

Hum... Both the one about writing that story set in Real Life and the one about Luna's backstory? Sorry, I'm a bit slow to get things. Specially when I'm sleepy.

XD And you got a point about wasting time.

Before I'm done bothering you (I'm sorry -_-):

How would Luna react after meeting her dead boyfriend's spirit in the underworld? Guilty about dating the friend, right? Then again, I think one of the boys would just pull a I Want My Beloved to be happy at the end.

And once again, I can't thank you enough for "listening" to me.

Actually, having the still living boyfriend tell her about the promise he made to his friend could help ease the transition when she does die. Which, again, I feel is rather romantic.

And don't worry about bothering anyone: This is a forum, we can respond at anytime we find convenient. >:3 I just wouldn't go about asking the same things across multiple threads. That would be counted as trolling which many tropers don't take kindly to.

The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
