That was the problem the horror industry underwent int he 80's and 90's. The legitimately threatening characters of Jason Voorhees and Freddy became cartoons pedaled to kids, ostensibly becoming the protagonists.
nyo ho hoCreepypasta? Good kind of story. Not all of them will find the fear in everyone who reads them, some of them are just plain bad.
I do not have a top ten list. My favorite one has to be the NES Godzilla Creepypasta, simply because I have played and beaten the game it is based on, to the point I own it. Reading it made me rethink the whole game as I used to play it. The password music for that game is actually pretty creepy, I was never able to understand why it was like that. Worse the passwords were huge and you had to write them down. So you had to listen to that music until you got it right or finished it.
That was a pretty good one for me.
Bogleech has a wonderful list of creepypastas. My personal favorite so far is Greasepaint for... Well, you'll realize soon after you start reading.
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.You want one you got one:
10. The Rake
9. Mr. Widemouth
8. Arizona (Creepypasta, not the state)
7. SCP-107
6. Marble Hornets
5. Everyman Hybrid
4. Squidwards Suicide
3. Slenderman
2. Anything by Slime Beat (Abandoned By Disney, Funnymouth, Lost Episode, tons of others)
1. Can't decide. There's something out there that's worse then what I can think of, more sophisticated, subtle, poetic, and creepy.
The world isn't ready for giant T4 combustion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GbpGiYmBSs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKm9Just dropping in to let you guys know that Faces, Strange and Secret has sixty-three creepypasta in it. And they are really, really good ones, too - like "Decay" by Omega or "152 Hours" by tgecko or "She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone in an Empty Field" by Amelia.

The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableI didn't know that the original author of Candle Cove was known!
I'd say I'm being refined Into the web I descend Killing those I've left behind I have been EndarkenedIndeed he is! It was originally posted on his website, Ichor Falls, but it was copypasta'd almost as soon as it became popular and the attribution was lost.
...and that, class, is why copyright infringement is bad for consumers. :P
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableAnyone know what 'pasta this image here◊ relates to?
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."I forgot the name but I know what it's about.
Essentially, three guys and a girl go into an old abandoned silo for lolz. Then, they open a window in the silo and find that thing. They run to the car, but one of the guys gets caught and the thing tears his face off. The thing then wears the guy's face as the mask. The guys and the girl make it to the car, and drive away. The narrator (one of the guys) then finishes the story by saying he has been seeing a shadow outside his bedroom window lately
Your Honor...Where did you find the story?
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Creepypasta wiki.
Your Honor...What's the name of the story?

Your Honor...Anybody know the name??
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Boothworld Industries is rather sinister. It reminds me a bit of Button, Button.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableIs there a Chris-chan Creepypasta?
I find most creepy-pastas tend to fuck up the ending because they try to explain it or the end up trying to hard. Most pasta writers don't know when to stop.
Me personally I think the best horror involves the disguised monster. Not the killer hidden as a clown, but the monster passing as human. The corpse walker, the imitater, the facestealer. Relevant video

Stop caring and embrace nullness.I agree. I think one of the main problems with endings is that people try to end things with a surprise, but wind up ruining the story. This is one of my main complaints with Funnymouth. I would have liked that story more, but part of what makes it more comical than creepy to me is the "surprise" ending. Sure, I've seen some pastas pull off twist endings well like Candle Cove, but most twists I see seem to just be in there to arbitrarily screw with your expectations as if unpredictability is inherently scary.
Not a single mention of 'Pale Luna' that I can see?
for shame
Maybe it's just me, but pastas with a Tomato in the Mirror ending are simply not scary. Take The Face, for example:I was thrilled by the story, until the lame and absolutely cliched ending. It just killed it for me.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."
I'm not a horror expert, but I think it's acceptable for horror to have the odds stacked in the antagonist's favor. It's not supposed to be a happy ending for the protagonists.
I do think, however, there is a difference between creating a threat that instills a feeling of hopelessness and just trying to convince your readers that the bad guy is "omg kewl". The latter sounds closer to what you described.
