Atlas Shrugged getting several movies:

I'm a buff of bad movies, so I intend to see this. Even though I hated the novel.

I want to see the train disaster, perhaps the best written scene in the book ruined in the final paragraph by ham-fisted messages.

And I want to see that filibuster. Something like 100 pages, over three hours in-universe, what does it become in an actual film? I want to see Team Eeeeevvvvviiillllll Looters quietly sit and listen to being blamed for half the evils of humanity and being given a death sentence.

Just found a copy on the shelf and had a look. Really? Part one of Atlas Shrugged is only an hour and a half? Couldn't squeeze another half hour out of this, at least? Come on, make it as overblown and grandiose as you can!

Maybe half of part two is the filibuster.

It's the Over Lord!
All of part two would be. It's just one big train crash with a droning monologue running over it. Wouldn't that be a thrilling movie?

Just awesome like that
Has anyone ever actually tried reading that entire speech aloud to see how long it would actually take to be given?

I had just seen that here on the site, maybe it was one of the dreaded Darth Wiki pages: the speech takes three hours in-novel but in the real world it takes six.

...damn. How'd she even have the patience to write the damn thing?

It's more like "how'd she have the patience to write hundreds of pages of a shitty story leading up to her obvious philosophical essay?"

Part two is out today.

No sooner than I post that and the ad displays over this topic. I think Galt is judging me and his verdict is MOOCHER. I work 40 hours a week for an evil non-Objectivist company! I pay taxes! I break no physical laws with my genius and determination.

Oh, yeah, that was being made. I've heard so little (read: nothing) about when it was coming out that I didn't notice.

Pfffft. That's hilarious. I can imagine all three people who see the movie are gonna be really confused.

It's hilarious because the few positive reviews of the first one tried to claim it had very dedicated actors who were clearly passionate about the source material. Yeah. Not passionate enough to stay with a sinking franchise after the first film bombed, apparently.

War ALWAYS changes. Man does not.
This quote on the imdb site for A S 2 is delicious. "The very fact that a sequel was made to Atlas Shrugged is nothing but a MOCKERY to everything Ayn Rand espouses as virtues. Let me tell you why." - cut.

I take it the person who wrote the post is unfamiliar with the whole concept of irony? As Ayn Rand's "virtues" deserve nothing less than mockery.

[up][up] Sticking with a franchise that the market had judged to be poor quality could be considered contrary to Objectivism, so maybe it shows they were passionate about the source material. ;)

Mornin'.
Pretty sure Rand's philosophy would approve of sequelizing the fuck out of Atlus Shrugged, personally.

Even if it were Atlas Shrugged 2: Electric Boogaloo — not Part II.

What I lacks in brains I make for in…um…I make up for in…in…um…gummy bears. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Yeah I'm not sure how adapting Atlas Shrugged or making a sequel to that adaptation mocks the Objectivist philosophy.

Which movie(s) will have John Galt's speech? I'll just watch that one just to see how they pull it off.

Raven Wilder
From what little I know about Objectivism, I thought it really disapproved of profiting from something you didn't create yourself. Given that, wouldn't any commercial use of Rand's works after her death be anti-Objectivist?

I really love that given their lack of critical and financial success these films are inferior by their own values.

It's the little ironies that always make me smile. I didn't even realize there was a sequel until about fifty seconds ago.

And what the fuck robert picardo? I thought you were cool.

I imagine a true objectivist would, ahem, object to wasting money making a sequel to a film that didn't do well in the first place. However, Objectivism in practice has *always* been more about cult behavior than rational philosophy.

Yeah. Not passionate enough to stay with a sinking franchise after the first film bombed, apparently.

A lot of the newer actors are slightly bigger names (assuming one still considers Biff Tannen, Princes Daisy from the 'Super Mario Bros' live-action movie, Alex Mack, and others "big names").

In any case, the newer actors are probably more indicative of the production being able to afford better profile Z-list actors who have done a bit more noticeable work in the past who would also be asking for slightly more money. That still wouldn't be enough to make a Part II good, but seeing Biff Tannen's name is still better than putting out a piece of shit Part I without any even slightly recognizable faces.

Funniest of all, they had enough in the budget to afford having Teller around for a day... but not the one that actually does the talking.
