Oh Fox.

The article is about as fair and balanced as the title suggests. And some people still insist that Fox News is not as bad as some of its counterparts.

I mean, really. Accusing games like Bulletstorm of causing rape?

Because some of the achievements are named after sexual innuendos?

Really, Fox?

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), rates all video games as a guide for parents; each game carries a letter-label at retail (T for Teen, M for Mature) and an online-only summary. Lieberman and others say it's useless, because it isn't enforced at retail.

Lolwhat.

Honestly, I was thinking this meant worst game in regard to gameplay mechanics and such. Like ET bad. Not this. Guess I sholda expected this from FOX.

I'm convinced that Fox News isn't actually a news outlet and is actually a comedy group written by some truly great trolls.

There's something that's always bothered me. People who played Mortal Kombat and Doom when they were kids have long since grown up, and may even have children of their own. Wouldn't they know, from firsthand experience, that violent video games aren't going to harm the teenagers that play them?

I though the entire point was that 9 year olds are playing the game.

Like that.

TMA: Then that's their parent's fault. Or whoever got them the game. And I played stuff like Mortal Kombat when I was like 7. Come on. :/

Also, heh, that reminds me of that story of a kindergartener telling his/her teacher to F off. :P

This Rock Paper Shotgun article, by the way, is a great commentary on just how shoddy this piece of journalism is.

Dammit, media, I thought we'd more-or-less gotten over your obsession with the evils of videogames.

@pagad: Oprah and Dr. Phil would suggest otherwise.

This year, the Supreme Court will make a landmark decision about video-game violence. A California law now makes it illegal for a merchant to sell a Mature-rated game to a minor; the law imposes a $1,000 fine.

Fucking hell it actually went through? They just did it to get California off their backs, didn't they?

My little brother did that in kindergarten. He also threw a chair at the teacher and stuff.

I somehow doubt vidja games caused it though.

I think it's those parents who are the subject of this distaste.

It's those parent's fault, and quite a few are really ticked off at them.

Though the article implies, if not outright states that it's the fault of the ratings system or the people who are selling it.

@The Mighty Anonym: I finished Half-Life - FPS du jour of the time, rated 15 by the BBFC and M by the ESRB - for the first time when I was nine. I'd say it hasn't really adversely affected me.

Then I entered all the cheat codes and started trying to kill things.

I saw the Angry Video Game Nerd's review for Superman 64.

It was hilarious.

What I want to know is who the fuck would let their 9 year old play Bulletstorm.

I'd let a 14 year old play it, but not a 9 year old.
The AR-15 is responsible for 95% of all deaths each year. The rest of the deaths are from obesity and drone strikes.
PARTY HARD!!!!
I have a seven year old nephew who has played GTA.

And a 6-ish niece who watches Family Guy.

Not too far fetched.

It's a question of parental responsibility. Will this negatively influence your child? Will it distress them? If not, there's probably no reason not to let them play it.

If parents are just gonna be like "I'll let them play whatever, it's their responsibility" then the end result is that kids react negatively to stuff that clearly wasn't suitable, somebody kicks up a fuss, and everyone gets penalised by enraged moral guardians.

My four-year-old like G-mod. Specifically, I spawn wooden stuff for her and she takes a crowbar to them. She gets to be destructive, so as not to be destructive in my house. Haven't seen her smashing stuff in real life yet, so I guess it's working out.

...she didn't like what the explosive barrels did, though.

Who seriously reads Fox Troll News anyway...
I played Doom 2 with my daddy as a kid; I'd waste all our bullets hitting the "shoot" button while he tried to aim the gun at the monsters.

Some of today's stuff is a bit more violent, but there's no need to condemn all hints of violence.
BTW, I'm a chick.
