Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up][up][up]I think using the same title already does that, anyway. I find it weird that they'd re-use it if it's completely different.

They want to use the same name because of name recognition. Essentially, readers are more likely to pick up a book called New Avengers then they are to pick up a book called Illuminati, even if that's what it was about. (Yes, I know there's a new book called Illuminati, but it's about villains, not heroes.)

Over in the newspapers

MJ's in a foul mood now, likely frustrated that she has influence over Namor and can't seem to use it where she's presently at. Peter is'nt worried about her crush (refreshingly), he seems more concerned she'll act on her frustration and try to actively find Namor to chat about a peaceful resolution.

I just wish they'd do one or the other. I don't care if they use old numbering or new numbering, but switching mid-stream grates me. A lot of the longer-running titles do this and we'll see, like,

  • Spider-Man: Aunt May Fights Crime #12
  • Spider-Man: Aunt May Fights Crime #13
  • Spider-Man: Aunt May Fights Crime #200
  • Spider-Man: Aunt May Fights Crime #201.

I'm surprised to see people in this thread liking the newspaper strip; I've never read it, but I heard it's not very good, or at least it wasn't at one point. Maybe it's better now.

Whether or not it's actually good isn't so much the matter as that it tends to be reliably entertaining, plus it seems to do away with a lot of the junk that makes a lot of modern comics not worth their money.

Plus it still has the Peter-MJ marriage, so there's that too.

Wow, if "reliably entertaining" is what you're settling for the current run of the main book must be worse than I thought.

One can enjoy 'good', 'very good', 'excellent', 'reasonably entertaining' and even 'So bad it's good' things all at the same time, they aren't mutually excluding.

I wouldn't be reading the main run of the mainline Spider-Man comic right now regardless. I didn't really get a sense of what state it was in prior to the whole OMD/BND debacle after getting into reading comics as a regular thing (though my memory tells me it was in a questionable state at that point), and then the whole marriage reboot happened and I've mostly avoided reading the various Spider-Man series ever since then regardless of how good or bad people say it is.

re: comics dying

it's more complicated than that. the big two basically imploded in the nineties and lost a lot of its readership but things have gotten better since then. if anything more people are reading comics now than they have in years.

it's still largely a niche hobby though so jumping on points do help intimidated people by making it more accessible.

I think Slott summed it up best when he wrote his newspaper strip story in Spider-Verse. It's such an innocent universe, you can have a good time either mocking it or enjoying it for what it is, it's got a familiar status quoe, Peter and MJ are more settled and committed there, and Peter's never made any of the numerously bell-ended mistakes he's made in 616. MJ is also far more supportive of Peter's costumed life and has willingly tried involving herself in his missions (even as recently as she's trying to be a peace ambassador in the Namor arc)

On top of that, it hasn't bothered with Aunt May in years since she almost married the Mole Man, and she hasn't been missed at all.

Oh, and in today's strip, Peter and MJ are eating quite a lot of corn-on-the-cob. This is the gift that keeps on giving.

And, yeah, I would say the strip has improved a bit since the lows of the Mole Man and Clown 9 arcs. It still has moments of sheer insanity, but that's half the fun of it

As a sidenote, try to stay away from that site. It was sold, for some inexplicable reason, to a wanted data thief recently.

Alright, I guess I'll wade through 4chan's slime if it means I get to read this comic without paying...

Ha ha ha, Peter accidentally left his fly down during a press conference. And he called one of the villains "Kraven's nipple." Ha ha ha. Ha. It's so funny. What witty and clever writing. I am laughing so hard right now. Ha. Ha. Ha.

So... who wants to take bets on how long until things go back to the old status quo? I'm guessing Peter will be selling his company to Mephisto just in time for Spidey's next movie, if not in time for his appearance in Civil War.

[up][up]Yeah, and that was before I got to the last page. Doctor Octopus survived by uploading his mind into the Living Brain and now he's acting all stalkerish over Anna. Ow. OW! My eyes hurt from rolling so hard!

Okay, actually, that could be an interesting plot development, but the presentation of The Reveal was a little... over the top. Seriously, a little subtlety would've been nice. All you need is for the Living Brain to act a bit too clingy to Anna and any astute reader could easily figure it out. We don't need a panel of a flaming Doc Ock head inside Living Brain's eyes.

I do like that they lampshaded the similarities to Silver Age Iron Man, though.

...Come to think of it, considering everyone in-universe presumably remembers Tony pulling the "my secret identity is my bodyguard" trick, you'd think people would be less likely to be fooled by Peter pulling the exact same trick. Especially since Prowler-Spidey apparently sucks in comparison to the real Spider-Man. "Gee, why does Spider-Man suddenly get really awful at fighting whenever he's in the presence of the guy he's supposed to be bodyguarding?"

Well, at least they seem to be painting Otto in a negative light and not making it look like his obsession with Anna is a good thing. Here's hoping the plotline doesn't end with Anna forgiving Otto for being a crazy body-snatching supervillain and hooking up with him...

Besides, if they had sex right now, it'd technically mean Doc Ock is raping the Living Brain.
