Sue me, I'm a sucker for free MMO games. But I'm curious as to whether this one's worth the plunge.

Just about the first Google hit that wasn't an official site was this article, which sours me a bit on the idea. I know that it's limited, being F 2 P and whatnot, but the whole "pay the same, get half the features" option bugs me. The odds of me actually paying anything more than the one-time fee for a Silver account are vanishingly slim (right now I'm trying very hard to justify spending $20 so I can buy some new storylines to tide me over until Echo Bazaar's next real content update), but still...it irks me a fair bit on principle.

In the event of a firestorm, the salad bar will remain open.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking to see what Everquest 2's about, since damn near everything unique the game has to offer is locked and has to be purchased in packets about 7 to 10 USD each.

Oh, NOW the game gets noticed...

Yeah, wait till Sony to introduce "Station Cash", a Real Money Transaction currency into the game, and then offer free to play servers to finally get this game some attention...

It's complete bullcrap. Apparently, instead of actually ADVERTISING the game for the past 6 years, they decided maybe they can pull in a bigger audience by offering a free to play server where you can pay real money for some extra bells and whistles that subscription players like myself don't normally have access to. The current head of development, Smokejumper, outright admitted that advertising doesn't work, and would rather impliment this stupid Station Cash idea instead of listening to the actual players on ideas that would bring a bigger audience into the game.

Sorry, if you're wanting to know about E Q2x, you basically only get to choose between 4 races out of 15, and 8 classes out of 24. You'll have full access to the entire game except for the most recent expansion, meaning you will always be 1 year behind the subscription game in terms of content... UNLESS you start paying the same amount per month as us subscribers currently play, in which case you'll have access to all races, classes, and content.

If you're interested in learning about the game and the world of Norrath, then I can't deny it's not a bad way to learn and feel if you might enjoy the game.

The problem is that SOE seems adamant on getting as many players into the F 2 P servers, alienating the subscribers by not giving these new players any way to transfer their character to the regular servers. You'd have to go out and buy EQ 2 and start your character over again.

[up]

You play on regular servers, DRCEQ? What're your system specs and how well would you say the game runs on your rig?

Uhh lets see here.

AMD Phenom II X4 945 processor 3.00 G Hz 4.00 Gb installed memory 64-bit operating system

Umm.. lets see... ASUS EAH 5750 Formula graphics card on an ASUS M 4 A 78 T-E motherboard... A Quad-core if I remember right.

When I completely overhauled my computer at the start of 2010, I basically bought top of the line equipment. I was able to run EQ 2 with literally every graphical setting turned up to maximum and still get over 100 frames per second in the old world of the game. Each expansion that comes out becomes a little more graphically intense, so in the current expansion I'm usually running between 30-70, depending on where exactly I am and what's going on around me at the time. I usually don't notice visual lag for very long, and it usually only lasts a couple seconds at most when the game is loading up a really intense area with lots of NP Cs and environments that need to be loaded up. After they're loaded, FPS returns to normal.
