Um... Is this supposed to be a squid-like alien or an actual squid?
Like a normal squid, except sentient and capable of scuttling across land for brief periods of time.
And aren't squids alien enough as it is?

I don't think anyone can help you. Any, and I mean do mean any characterization you give it will be anthropomorphization.
Also, what's this for? A children's book?
Well, depending on how silly or serious you want this to be, you can take some cues from Squidward. Really, just make her like a normal character, but a squid. That's usually how people write animal characters.
"War doesn't prove who's right, only who's left." "Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future."Naughty Tentacles would be useful for A Date With Rosie Palms on a female.
I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...I think that your best bet is to do your own research into marine biology and cephalopod behaviour. The Internet should help a little.
What's precedent ever done for us?
OK, so I have a things for squids. But I'm not sure how to one as a character. The best I've got is having her communicate via flashes of her chromatophores. And that's with following my own advice of "Create a character, give her a role (she's a school teacher), and add tentacles where necessary". Maybe I'm missing something.
