Or games you got to like after they became Deader Than Disco (or still like despite that).

For me, it's Quake III Arena (and Quake Live). A great multiplayer FPS that has withstood the test of time, but I don't personally know anyone who still plays it. I can't just hop into a random server either, because I'll find myself up against players who have been playing for years and will likely gangbang me into ragequitblivion. QL isn't any more alive, although it does have players who are closer to beatable.

Also, shmups. There was a time when (American) arcades actually had them. Nowadays, the only arcade in the SF Bay Area with more than 1-2 of them (other than the Ultracade machine of emulation fail) is a 20-25 minute drive away and is kinda banged up.  *

If, 12 years ago, I had gotten into shmups as much as I currently am into them right now, I could've imported Radiant Silvergun before its price went batshit.

Any Final Fantasy games with the number below VIII. Well, that is until the GBA remakes came out, but I did feel that way at the time.

I started playing them when the PS 2 was already out.

Help?.. please...

Sonic the Hedgehog, a series I forgot about until around the 10th anniversary after my Genesis broke (I was a little kid). Now I won't get to play as Big in an Egg Walker—I don't care how badly that played, it screams Crowning Moment of Awesome!

The Legend of Zelda, which I didn't play until last summer, after several years of hearing friends tell me how great it was. The same goes for Final Fantasy, which I didn't get into until last weekend...

The Legend Of Zelda. I played the original, but I hated it and didn't pick up another Zelda game until last year. It was as good as people kept insisting they were, too.

I am just now playing Metroid for the first time, too.

Metroid and Castlevania, definitely. I'm only just expanding my games from Sonic and Pokemon and really taking more interest in stuff. Problem is, it takes me fucking ages to start something completely new to me. If I enjoy it, I'll binge on the rest of the series. I played a ridiculous amount of Metroidvanias in 2010.

So I'll probably get it more when I start a new series.

STGs (Shooting Games) in general. My first experience with this genre are Giga Wing, Viper Phase 1 (Both of them are in Nickel City), Touhou, and RefleX.

By then, most STG games on the arcades are gone, and most of them are for the PC as of now.

Everyone tells me about how good the Metal Gear Solid games are and I believe them, but at this point there is just so much Archive Binge out there, I'm sure I'll never start playing it.

Also I'm playing Deus Ex now finally. Damn it's a good game, the models have aged horribly but the gameplay has aged like wine.

The Dragon Quest series. I'm really enjoying IX right now, and I'm kinda wondering why I waited so long to start the series. :V

Guild Wars. My sister randomly bought the game for me shortly after it came out. It was certainly fun. I just couldn't take time away from WoW to really get into it. When I finally started enjoying it there were two stand alone expansions with the third incoming and the sequel announced. So I ended up dropping it again because I was so far behind.

Didn't play Halo until 2 came out.

Played Condemned 1 and 2 for the first time last weekend.

Never even heard of Sonic the Hedgehog until Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

Disgaea. I only actually got into it because of ZHP, since there are obviously a lot of references to it in there. I'd be kind of pissed off if all the references went over my head.

Metal Gear Solid. I didn't play 1-3 until I was already spoiled silly about most of the series, 4 included. Also, I didn't pick up my N64 or anything on it until the Gamecube had already been released.

Metroid. Other M was the first that I actually played, excluding the demo of Prime Hunter and the first few seconds of the original game. I recently bought Prime Trilogy and finished Prime, and I'm starting Echoes.

Mass Effect. Has something to do I only got Sovereign midway through this year, and the old machine couldn't run it because of its graphics card.

If you're talking about the NC in San Jose, Giga Wing is still there (on the lol 5 lives setting), but Viper Phase 1 has been gone before I started going there in 2004.
