Yes, this one is actually about Sudan.

Sudan has recently undergone a referendum to see if the Southern part should split from the rest of the country. The results won't be due to february but it all looks like it has gone off without much of a hitch.

Those bbc links have a handy map at the bottom where you can see the demographic distributions. The basic point is that all the Arab identifying Sudanese live in the north. You can see the lay of the land on the maps as well, the North has different geography thus societal formation. The civil war and genocide has been by the "Arab" Muslims against the "African" Muslims (with some African Christians also getting a kicking to boot).

Not sure what this does to Darfur which is in the North but also contains non-Arab peoples. There is a Danzig or Hatay on the border: Abeyei will have to vote to join a particular region.

You mean the concept that has been dead for decades outside the hopes and dreams of a certain class of intellectual?

[up][up]Actually it's been alive for centuries, because it came with the religion: Muslims were supposed to form one Republic, one Nation indivisible, under God, with liberty and justice for all, where everyone had the right to peace, prosperity, and the pursuit of salvation. Maybe you're confusing with Panarabism, which is something else entirely (for one thing it is an entirely secular movement, with its fair share of communists and atheits... funnily enough Communism meshes rather well with Islam... as it would with Christianism, really, if only they tried, I mean Jesus's teachings are really begging for that sort of Memetic Mutation of the serious sort).

I think there's a similar concept with the other religions its related to as well, Christianity and Judaism, except under different names. Catholic Europe was supposed to be united and not constantly killing each other afterall.

But you know, Sudan is a pretty young state that is only loosely related to the previous regimes of the land. The ethnic groups and whatnot were just rammed together by colonial powers that felt like drawing lines randomly. It'll be some time before these people develop new political and social mechanisms to live alongside each other in relative peace.

So the results are in, kind of. The comission wont actually declare anything until February to deal with appeals or concerns.

  • sigh* It's a pity Bashir is popular among the Arabs there. Then he'd be too busy to be doing crap like this. Maybe the Egyptians can mess with him for good PR. They hate each other anyway. Or the EAC could try something, who knows...

Google maps is behind. South Sudan has been independent for an hour and Goggle haven’t updated Google maps yet. Come on Google hurry hurry.

Have to say I to very much like the flag.

Been reading the BBC article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-13964352 and there are some basic yet difficult problems to overcome. Take joining the UN for an example. While it joining is likely to not be too much of a problem (though don't quote me on that) they General Assembly hall is full and they don't have a spare desk.

General Assembly hall is full and they don't have a spare desk.

Well maybe they'll take Sudan's desk and cut off a third of it. The nice third, the one with the plant and the pencil holder.
