I noted another thing, in the first paragraph: "A few minor traits such as age and name may change, but there's no doubt that they are almost one and the same." It helps?

Forgot this was here. My proposal:

[up]Well, it is not perfect, but it is the best solution given in this thread by far. If not exists other suggestion, it received my vote.

This has a clock right, what's the consensus?
[up][up][up]Go with it.

I prefer a solution that requires A) as little retraining of tropers and B) as little fixing of wicks as possible. Do we have one of those? I'm afraid I'm starting to lose track.
"Existential Despair" is an oxymoron.
Well if Expy is the supertrope, there wouldn't be much wick fixing, no?

That makes sense. Ok, I approve the plan.
"Existential Despair" is an oxymoron.

At this point, turning it into a Super Trope seems to be the best solution due to the massive decay...
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.
I agree that this should be a supertrope, and the old "only from the same author" definition should be YKTTW'd as a subtrope.
Rhymes with "Protracted."
Mind-Altering Substance
I don't know what to suggest—I was part of the discussion the last time it came up, and back then I had no real idea what Expy "really" meant—I was mis-using it along with everyone else, and I believe "Captain Ersatz" was narrowly defined to be Superhero copies only.

I think it may be better to "lose" Expy to the most common definition, and create a new trope for "Author Recycling Their Own Characters" since that IS a valid trope beyond Only Six Faces.
[up]We do need to make sure it's distinct from Star System.

Oh, hello new trope I'm not aware of! I vote that we move the original definitions of Expy into Star System or Only Six Faces where applicable, then.

[up]Uh, no, the bizarrely misnamed Star System (which is in TRS itself) is about drawn art styles, as is Only Six Faces. The original of Expy has nothing to do with drawing, per se. It's about characters, a phenomenon that occurs in all sorts of media.

"Existential Despair" is an oxymoron.
Characters Similar To Characters In Different Series is not a trope and probably not even a thing. It would attract misuse. We should not have that. The trope is Characters Inspired By Characters In Different Series.
Rhymes with "Protracted."
The Egg-Man
I don't think we should split off Word of God-confirmed examples. Otherwise, it works as mentioned above, with a new trope for re-used designs and Expy as a supertrope.

The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
