I'm looking for a good squad based first/third person shooter with a singleplayer mode and optionally coop. So far, I've liked these games:

The * means that a game is on this list not because I've played it but because I know it exists.

P.S. Is there any way to hook up the Unreal compile tools up to Hammer? I wanted to try out making a map for SWAT 4 after the SWAT 3 map didn't pan out, and I realized how horrible I am at using Unreal Ed (well, SWAT Ed, but basically the same thing).

ARMA II — extremely realistic, co-op is done through individual missions, does both 1st-person and 3rd-person extremely well

Borderlands — not at all realistic, but pretty fun co-op. 3rd-person has to be done by editing config files.

Empires for Half Life 2. It's actually an RPS-RTS hybrid, but one aspect of it is that you can join a Squad and you get info on your squadmates' health and positions.

Also throwing in a non-squad based shooter with squads example, a game of Battlefield 2142 is quite fun if you get a good squad.

@Empires Mod that sounds awesome. How many people play?

Also, in Empires, the team Commander can order a squad to attack or move.

^At least 24 to 34. Not really sure.

I wish I could play Borderlands (and, for that matter, Alpha Protocol), but I have an NVIDIA card. I'm amazed that in today's game development world that people will let companies get away with screwing over people who use the second most popular line of graphics cards. I can understand it in the C64 et al era, but we have Direct X, Open GL, etc. I'm not buying 100 dollars plus just to get an On Live to play that game, Gearbox. You better fix that for Duke Nukem Forever. </rant>

I'm thinking of breaking the list into SP/Coop and Multiplayer lists. Mods allowed. Elephant in the room: do we allow Counter-Strike? That is, is it squad based? I've seen that devolve into flame wars on other forums, so I guess it's debatable or something.

Anyone played Renegade X?

EDIT: Rocket Dude, I read your page and clicked on Killing Floor. It sounds cool.

To clarify your list — Borderlands can be soloed, but you'd better be really good at kiting, or really quick with the healing items and abilities.

EDIT: For pure multiplayer, the Enemy Territory series is awesome. Brink, which is effectively Enemy Territory 3, is coming out hopefully within two months.

I liked Brute Force on the original Xbox. It's a bit more mindless that most games on your list, though.

@Shadow Dog: I thought I was the only one here who knew of Renegade X, but that's off-topic.

Also, I actually was gonna mention Killing Floor until I realized that it doesn't have very similar aspects to a Squad-Based Shooter.

Renegade X its pretty good and it really feels like playing a soldier unit on the c&c series, the only thing i could complain about is maybe the size of some maps.
