One day I will get my Wii back and I guess that might be followed by purchasing and playing Epic Yarn.

Anyway, I beat Super Star's True arena with Freeze, which I have learned is not such a good ability to use in boss battles. In fact, Kirby Super Star/Ultra seems to be one of the worst games to tackle without an ability.

Among abilities, ice lacks a clip through move, has no projectile other than a command grapple and does pretty low damage, outside of its command grapple and has a low friction run. It worked well enough in the arena but was not very useful in the true arena. Fighter always works well though and Hammer works even better.

Galacta Knight is probably the most annoying thing in the true arena though. Its Meta Knight, with more defense, larger attack hit boxes, the ability to summon elite mooks and is nearly always flying or elevated in some way so that your ice blocks usually has harmlessly beneath him. The only good thing is that he can be slid under but I have not figured out how to consistently do that without getting a lance in the face...but I still beat him and Marx Soul. Now what's a worse ability to use that ice? Wing perhaps? Nerfed plasma?

Wing is pretty terrible for bosses, as is Ninja in my opinion. (Ninja's fun, but doesn't have a good damage output on bigger enemies.)

I'm not sure how well Suplex would fare against Galacta Knight and Marx Soul, but I'm pretty sure it'll be good against everyone else.

Here's something interesting: In Dedede's mode in Triple Deluxe, Sectonia (the final boss for Kirby) dies after form one is defeated, and right afterward, the Mirror World mirror from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror shows up, resulting in the first known appearance of Shadow Dedede (complete with an attack that references Dedede's frequent Dark Matter possessions)!

I am intrigued.

Well I finally beat the true Arena with Suplex. It was actually one of my worst runs, but at this point I either

A: Lost to Galacta Knight

B: Took an hit that resulted in me losing Suplex

C: Beat Galacta Knight with only a sliver of health then messed up against Marx soul.

Scenario C is what did me in, except I actually won this time. Marx Soul I despise all the more that I realize his fight is just a long test of patience. Galacta Knight (and in Suplex's case Wham Bam Jewel) are harder but since there is no place to practice against him outside of true arena and he is the true arena foe you encounter the least it is hard to get the timing of his moves down...so I did not. I just held guard and spammed pinpoint kick whenever he teleported low enough. Of his new attacks, one of them is ripped off from a much funner and legitimately challenging boss.

By contrast, suplex vs Galacta knight saw me use the ability to its fullest, to dodge his moves, hit before he could retaliate, most effectively dispatch his mooks, perform the correct throw at moments notice, it was intense every single time. Even the times I was lazy and let a helper do most of the work. He's basically Meta Knight hard mode but there is still more to him, like the fact he does not walk. The music helps too I guess.

Anyway, I gained new love for suplex. Next is ninja.

I've just realized that Kirby has had at least one ability for nearly every Pokémon type:

Pokémon Type->Kirby ability

  • Normal -> "Normal" Kirby
  • Fighting -> Fighter Kirby
  • Flying -> Wing Kirby (and Tornado Kirby)
  • Ground -> Animal Kirby
  • Rock -> Stone Kirby
  • Bug -> Beetle Kirby
  • Ghost -> Ghost Kirby
  • Steel -> Metal Kirby
  • Fire -> Fire Kirby, Burning Kirby
  • Water -> Water Kirby
  • Grass -> Leaf Kirby
  • Electric -> Spark/Plasma Kirby
  • Ice -> Ice Kirby
  • Dark -> Ninja Kirby
  • Fairy -> Cupid Kirby

Which leaves out only Poison, Psychic, and Dragon. I'd love to see an ESP Kirby or a Dragon Kirby, personally, but I don't know how Poison would work.

Beetle Kirby
I don't remember that from any Kirby games.

Also, would you count Needle Kirby as (potentially) poison type?

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

Hypernova/Big Bang probably counts as another ability, so 5: Beetle, Clown, Bell, Sniper/Archer (not sure if it's been given an name by NoA yet) and Hypernova/Big Bang (Big Bang is the Japanese name, Hypernova's the American name).

While the dragon types are mostly western in appearance, they are almost entirely eastern in function.

So...I guess Dragon Kirby would have flight similar to cupid's, or maybe the plasma wisp's, attack with a breath of star shaped projectiles, four claws in place of his usual limbs, two of which are constantly clasping beads, and pink fish scales. He might have a physical attack that involves transforming into a crocodile-bear hybrid and a command grab where he turns an enemy/block/star into a giant bead and then rolls it along the ground.

Psychic Kirby would wear a toga or have a shinka. He would be able to produce a star like projectile like the Squeak squad triple star, but weaker that the player could aim or power up for more distance or damage. He would also be able to shoot off waves to douse for objects or cause apparitions to attack enemies. Maybe mind reading/future sight counter attacks.

Toxic would give him jellyfish tentacles with which to catch and paralyze minor enemies and the ability to produce clouds of poisonous fungal spores, maybe use botulism cans like grenades.

Anyway, I'd say "normal" Kirby is actually a flying type. He creates air currents which are directed at his mouth, puffs up to fly and releases damaging gusts. Yoyo, laser, mic and magic seem more like "normal" when you consider what "normal" Pokemon do.

I once had this really neat idea of Kirby as a Pokemon - kind of like Ditto mixed with Rotom. He would have a signature move that changed him (though he would also have a few regular learnable moves) and some extra unique moves that would change into other moves depending on the transformation.

It was something like this:

  • Inhale
  • X-Unique
  • Y-Unique
  • Low Kick, Gust, etc

Inhale would be like Counter - depending on the move the opponent used, Kirby would change into a bunch of different forms. The X and Y unique attacks (I couldn't think of what to name them) would change into transformation specific moves (he would get better ones at higher level), though they wouldn't always be type specific - for example Needle Kirby would be triggered by moves like Poison Sting and get Pin Missile or Needle Arm, Mirror Kirby might be triggered by moves like Mirror Shot but would be a Psychic type dual screener / Mirror Coat user, etc.

Also, though it isn't limited to offensive attacks, not all moves would trigger Inhale (contact moves, in particular, wouldn't always work). After transforming, Inhale would turn into an offensive move that does a set amount of damage (like Sonicboom) but changes Kirby back.

There would also be a Z-Unique move, so the user would have to choose between having a full set of powerful transformation-centered moves (which would be weaker, though not useless, when he's normal) and giving him a move or two outside of that.

Well I was going to suggest Magic as a possibility for Psychic, then maybe Cook...what about Beam? I mean, psybeam is one of those Psychic attacks, isn't it.

So, I beat the true arena without an ability, besides using fire lion for an extra shot against masked Dedede. It took over twenty minutes...I really need to get some newer Kirby games.

Beaten it now with Fighter, Suplex, Ninja, Ice, Plasma, Jet, Beam, Mirror, Sword Yo-Yo and Hammer. Don't feel like using any of the other abilities.

@0dd: Yes, I guess Needle could potentially be a poison type.

But I've just had a better idea: Science Kirby, where Kirby gets lab goggles and throws vials of chemicals. That would be a good for a Poison-type Kirby.

There's nothing stopping more than one transformation from being of a certain type (that is, he wouldn't have just one-per type). Mirror and Magic, for instance, would both be Psychic but would be triggered by different moves. Same with, say, Plasma and Beam (though Beam would probably also have Psychic attacks and Swift). Or Fighter and Suplex.

Kirby'd probably be an interesting mon for dual or triple battles with my system, but really unpredictable in single battles

Come to think of it, why are mirror move and mirror coat flying and psychic type moves? Mirrors are sand and silver, they should be rock and steel type moves.

Anyway, I already thought of counter part to toxic Kirby in they way Beam is separate from spark, laser and plasma. Just didn't list it because I was too lazy. (It would also be a counterpart to the already existent Wheel, Jet and Clean)

Industry Kirby would wear a business suit and spew out clouds of smog. He'd also be able to liter the area with torn up pieces of plastic and have close range strikes involving rusty scrap metal. His most powerful attack would simulate a nuclear meltdown.

The counterpart to psychic Kirby would be telekinetic Kirby, with a Stanisława Tomczyk haircut. His ability would manifest as a giant spoon which would scoop up or batter objects, Kirby himself included, and he would be able to finally teleport like the bosses he fights does.
