I've learned(and relearned) a decent amount of Japanese just by being around Nico Nico Douga, as well as talking with one of the video uploaders on their blog not too long back. It might be useful if you already have a basic grasp of the language. I used Google Translate quite a bit during the experience for kanji I do not know.

I know a few Japanese words, but I can't read the characters at all. I can, however, generally distinguish between Japanese, Chinese, and Korean characters. (日本語, 官话, 영어, amirite?)

Although the Japanese/Chinese distinction is kind of difficult for me sometimes.

I think it's technically possible to have 日本語 in Mandarin (Or whatever the hell most Chinese people use) anyway, not sure if they simplified any of those characters.

It doesn't really exist sometimes, as Japanese Kanji is nearly identical to... I think it was traditional Chinese? In any case, learning hiragana and katakana might be a good start for reading.

Both 官 and 话 are usable in Japanese as Kanji regardless IIRC.

Well no wonder I get so confused, if character from one can be used in the other!

In any case, at least I can distinguish Korean pretty easily.

Those are the more complex Chinese figures, right? What do they look like?

They're actually pretty much the same thing. There's little simplification in Japanese use of Chinese characters too.

Weeeeelllll, technically that's the Simplified Chinese for 話, so I dunno if it'd be workable, just because the 言 radical looks different, but I'm not Japanese.

If it's purely kanji, I usually can't tell whether you're showing me traditional Mandarin characters or kanji until you hit some specific words, like 國 vs. 国. Also, sometimes you can tell by the character choice, such as 紅 vs. 赤. Actually, both of those exist in Chinese with the same meaning, but the first one gets used more, I think.

But generally there's no issue because I can't really think of times I've seen Japanese without any hiragana or katakana...well, maybe store signs?

Yeah, same. If there are no kana, it's a safe bet I'm reading Chinese.
