The Aquila and the Rising Sun--The Imperium of Man Comes to Gensokyo:

1 Sullen Frog, Mon, 3rd Jan '11 8:24:23 AM from Voormithadreth Get RP Mod Relationship Status: I wanna know about these strangers like me
Whisperer in Darkness
It is said that every man is a spark in the darkness, and that by the time he is noticed he is gone forever—a retinal afterimage that fades and is obscured by newer, brighter lights. It is by words such as these that man has lived and died for ten thousand years, every waking moment a struggle to survive against the manifold horrors of the galaxy. Life in the Imperium of Man is by no means simple, and every man knows this; whether a soldier in the Imperial Guard, a simple farmer on a backwater agri-world or a poor, malnourished labourer working seventeen-hour shifts in the hive manufactorum with little to no pay, every man, woman and child is expected to live and die in service to the God-Emperor of Mankind, that their meaningless existences might contribute to the Imperium’s continued survival against the enemies that assail it from within and without. There is no peace in the forty-first millennium, and the best any human can hope for is a quick, peaceful death.

Nowhere is this mindset better validated than in the Ultima Segmentum, the eastern quadrant of the Imperium. It is a territory that encompasses roughly a third of the galaxy, stretching from beyond the core all the way to the easternmost fringes of the distant spiral arms, and every world in its dominion knows nothing of peace. Whether besieged from without by aliens and monsters, or attacked from within by heretics and rebels, it is a land that has known only war—and despite the best efforts by the Imperial Guard, the Inquisition, the Ultramarines and their successor chapters, and the Judicators of the Adeptus Arbites to restore order, war is all it has and shall ever know. How can a man dare hope for peace, when Tyranids devour entire star systems, Necrons strip planets clean of all life, Ork Waaaghs tear across space while leaving a trail of death and destruction, the forces of Chaos erupt from the warp to pillage and slaughter completely at random, and the Tau seize and proselytize the lands and citizens of the Imperium to expand their burgeoning empire?

It is the forty-first millennium, and there is only war…but recent events may have unveiled a ray of hope in the grim darkness of the far future.

One hundred and fifty years ago, the Ultima Segmentum was thrown into an uproar when a lush and verdant planet abruptly appeared in the Sophocles system, its arrival heralded by an immense shockwave in the Warp which drew the gaze of nearly every major power in the Segmentum to it. The planet is known as Gensokyo, and it is inhabited by a mixed population of humans and abhumans, nearly all of whom are female and many of which expressed a prodigeous aptitude for sorcery.

Thus began the Gensokyo Crusade, as the elements of the 43rd Pacification Fleet, led by Chapter Master Zolomon of the Steel Judicators and Inquisitor Arcturus of the Ordo Malleus, made war with the natives for a period of time, before the near-simultaneous arrival of an Ork Waaagh, a Chaos warband, a Tyranid Hive Fleet and a phalanx of Necrons forced the Imperium to cooperate with the Indigines. This alliance, ratified by Lady Kaguya Horaisen, exiled Princess of Luna, eventually expanded to include elements of the Tau Empire and the treacherous Eldar of the Craftworld Thann-Arawn.

It was eventually discovered that Gensokyo itself was a fragment of Holy Terra, sealed away in antiquity by the Emperor Himself and in conjunction with a number of other, similarly powerful entities. With this understanding, the Imperium and their allies agreed that it would be best to leave this sacred land to its own devices once all hostile elements had been eradicated from the face of Gensokyo, and after many trials and hardships—including the annihilation of the Moon by Tyranids and its subsequent cleansing by exterminatus, and the astounding victory over no less a foe than the traitor primarch Magnus the Red—Gensokyo was concecrated as a shrine world of the Imperium of Man, while her moon was restored by and conceded to the Tau in acknowledgement of their assistance. Apart from a few minor changes to the world—the introduction of an advanced land-train and transportation hub and the induction of the Oni race of abhumans into their own regiment of the Imperial Guard— Gensokyo was left as is, its inhabitants free to live as they always had.

Once, the Imperium of Man had come to Gensokyo. Now, the inhabitants of Gensokyo come to the Imperium of Man, and nothing shall be quite as it once was..."

—Excerpt from the writings of Coleander Elrond, Sage Logister and Historiographer of the Bureau for The Collection and Revision of History, 47th Department, Administratum

An Inquisitor taps a metal finger impatiently on the ceramite of his gauntlet, awaiting the hydraulic hiss heralding the lowering of the wide cargo bay door impeding his path off the ship. He wasn't impatient because it was a poor ship, mind you. In fact, this ship was both capable as well as comfortable to inhabit and operate for a vessel of her tonnage which, by Imperial standards, was kind of puny; a middle-ish freighter-class vessel, with just about enough armaments to defend themselves, cargo space enough to carry whatever heavy materiel they might require, along with a few amenities required to keep the few occupants alive, armed, and amused. He'd actually grown a bit protective of her, and over the course of the years a few people had been clocked in the face for going too far with their jibes. One of them a navy captain, of all things, which had necessitated a hasty retreat, but fortunately the good captain had been understanding, and had later pardoned the Inquisitor after a formal apology had been sent and a few crates of amasec had been passed along to him.

But again, this was not why he was impatient. He was impatient because they had people to meet, people he hadn't seen in quite a while now. Their new pilot, Drake, had opted to lag behind a little bit, he didn't seem too eager to meet the locals. He was probably still trying to convince himself to get out of the pilot seat and down here to play meet-and-greet. The door hisses, and hums open with little complaint. He takes a moment to savour the first few breaths of fresh, natural air, a welcome change from the tasteless recycled air produced by the vessel. He nods at the two others standing just nearby, Corollianus, the grizzled stormtrooper, and Zelenin, the vampiric saint. He steps off of the ramp, taking in the by now quite familiar forms of the lake, and the Scarlet Devil Mansion only a couple of hundred metres away. The Lysander didn't fit in within the mansion grounds, and had been landed close by. The Basilica was visible on a lakebank opposite of the mansion. A small Krieger detachment was moving towards them from the mansion. The mysterious gasmask-clad troops had taken pride in their custody of the mansion, and regulars and fresh troopers alike were rotated in and out of here in short intervals, it had become tradition to this particular regiment.

Arcturus gives a low chuckle, before mumbling to his companions.

"So, here we are."

In spite of the warm weather, the surface of the lake is frozen, as it has been ever since the first war, over a hundred years ago. The palace of Sedna, the god-queen of the fairies, looks much the same as it always has, but there is a second structure of living ice growing on the lake's surface next to it, a tangled thing of glittering crystalline plates and threads jutting upwards, already nearly as tall as the palace. It's clearly unfinished, whatever it is, but the shape of it seems a little familiar to Arcturus for some reason.

Arcturus nods in agreement, waiting for the Kriegers to come closer as he regards the icy lake.

"No industry, not one truly major population centre. A garden world, if you'll excuse the term. Well, just in case you were worrying that it would be boring here, it has its deadly sides too. You'll find out about those soon enough."

A young Ogryn stands in the back. Like most Ogryn like him working for the Imperium, he was somewhat tall and very burly. Also like most other Ogryn, he had about as much intelligence as your average sack of bricks.

Naturally, his primary two interests were serving the God-Emperor of Mankind and fighting in hand-to-hand combat. His main job was to be a highly effective meat shield. Due to his physical status and preference of pugilism, he was probably one of the best meat shields you could find.

This one particular Ogryn was known as Trogg. He had brown matted hair and was dressed in an imperial uniform. Notably, he had no weapons whatsoever. When he had once successfully beat a fully-armored xeno to death with his bare hands, it became very evident that he didn't need a weapon in the first place.

He shouts to one of his superior officers "Am Trogg am get to punch stuff?!"

Mr. (4)
Sitting somewhere at the edge of Gensokyo, in the very place of wonderland, sat a small paradise, an Eden untouched by man nor taint nor alien for one hundred and fifty years, an immense field of sunflowers-the Garden of the Sun. For a long time, this place was a playground for the mischievous laughter of fairies, a hotbed of magical activity and cheer- now, it is eerily quiet, the fairies since having left for a new gathering spot.

It was one hundred fifty years ago that the Imperium of Man came to Gensokyo, and it was one hundred and fifty years ago that this place underwent fire- the Tyranid threat invading this space and later, a vehicle crashing and setting a blaze into the field- but thanks to the diligent efforts of this Garden's sole resident, it remained intact. A very peculiar person lived here- an estranged Youkai of flowers- who would not leave the garden nor change its location. She strolled, day to day, merely watching the sunflowers sprout, grow, wither, and die for a century and a half. The influence of the Imperium held little sway in this miniature territory, for only the strong could move its protector, and it was its protector that kept both man and taint out.

The purity of the Garden of the Sun is amongst the most famous of Gensokyo- one of it's many Wonders- that is a testament to Gensokyo's principle- a place (once) sealed off from the outside to preserve an ancient and sacred beauty. The machinations and developments of technology over time had not been made apparent here.

A pink parasol bobbed between the flower heads, no particular direction or pattern to it. From beneath the shade of sunflowers, Yuuka Kazami wallowed in their fragrance, uninterested in the many new buildings and people who have arrived.

Meanwhile, a notably dishevelled looking Drake Lycetta was hunched over in the pilot's seat of the Lysander, agonising over whether or not to join his fellows outside. Brown hair that had once been neatly combed now had taken the liberty of becoming an unkempt mass, contrasting against slightly pale skin and a forest green Imperial Guard uniform. Hazel eyes roved over control panels and instruments as the man found himself completely enraptured in his contemplation.

Great... I've now been dumped in a nest of those Gensokyo abhumans... I can't very well stay in here, otherwise I'll probably end up shot for insubordination. I don't like the idea of meeting more of those buggers than necessary, though...

"What to do, what to do...?" he whispered to himself, massaging his head gently to calm the building headache. Eventually, the sense of duty drilled into Drake by his instructor won out, and he hesitantly got off of the chair, grabbing his Hotshot lasgun and fastening his helmet as he did so, sidling up toward Arcturus and the Storm Trooper next to him.

"Reporting for duty, sir." said Drake in an almost forced manner as tension built up inside him, waiting for a release.

Commissar-General Isaiah Graille, the man in command of Gensokyo's PDF, had made his way over to the mansion as soon as he was able, eagre to meet his old friend after such a long time. Isaiah, of course, hadn't been sitting on his laurels, and had led many successful campaigns during his time as commander, usually leaving a subordinate in charge as he went gallavanting off on his next adventure.

He had surreptitiously joined the Death Korps group marching up to the Lysander, and although he had gotten a few sidelong glances from soldiers curious as to why he had been there, no-one had pried to any significant degree. Silently he urged his men onward, a lone peaked cap bobbing among a sea of helmets.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion sat near the lake in pristine condition thanks to the Kreiger's efforts. In one hundred and fifty years the mansion had not changed on the outside. Looking at it, one would not think that it used to be inhabited by an Ork Waaaagh! and was damaged pretty badly. The curtains were drawn in the few windows that dotted the outside of the building seeing as how it was the middle of the day. One with exceptionally good eye sight might be able to notice a pair of glowing red eyes peeking out a window towards the Inquisitor's group.

The Inquisitor gives the young trooper a relaxed salute.

"Settle down, kid. You don't want to look like you've got a constipation in front of..."

He glances over at the line of hats, spotting a commissar cap behind the row of gasmasked soldiers. He didn't really catch the pair of glowing eyes, though.

"...In front of the commissar, do you?"

Drake quailed slightly at the thought of disappointing a Commissar. Such events tended to end in a messy death. Fighting the urge to backpedal furiously back into the ship, he managed to squeeze out a response from his now very dry throat:

"Sorry sir, it's just the Gensokyo abhumans, sir." Twitching slightly, he made a not too convincing attempt to relax.

"I'll... uh... keep it in mind, sir." said Drake, silently cycling through the different misfortunes he could go through in his time there. He might be outright murdered and eaten, or he could be abducted and tortured first, allowing some sick freak to get their thrills before having dinner. Of course, it'd be positively merciful if all he suffered was having his wallet or posessions stolen, although he didn't like the idea of losing his more valuable items... naturally, this did nothing to help the young man relax.

"Wait, what do you - ...oh. Well, I can tell ya that I can handle myself fine with my Hotshot, so unless they like gettin' an eyeful of lasers, they'll stay well clear." said Drake, trying to convince himself and the Storm Trooper that he could take one of these Abhumans on in a fight... although his sheltered upbringing didn't exactly help in either endeavour.

"Alright, alright Corollianus, let's not try and mess him up completely before he even meets any of them, shall we?"

Well, he had been neglecting to tell Drake that Zee wasn't exactly a regular human either, on the side of her saintly traits. He'd find out soon enough, though, and by then, he'd probably accept that fact without freaking out after first contact with Youkai, or hell, just spell-users in general. Well, provided he made it through that. Inexperience aside, though, the kid- Drake was most definitely skilled. Good reflexes, could shoot a lot straighter than a lot of other trained soldiers he'd met, and he could handle damn near any vehicle out there like nobody's business. His dislike for the natives in these parts could be a problem, though.

— The veteran nodded, already knowing that a long process awaited. —

— Within his cell, Battle Brother Martin knelt on the hard stone floor in prayer, clothed in a simple tunic, facing his armour in its case. The fortress monastery of Gensokyo Primaris was a quiet place, one that the young Steel Judicator had known for most of his life, and had only left for his proving on distant battlefields. Though he had read of the holy lands below the mountain, as every initiate trained here had, he never actually went down amongst the weird beings whom inhabited this world. Space Marines were separate from that, as far as he was concerned. On he prayed, trusting in the Emperor that the massive suit of power armour would continue to protect him in the battles to come. —

As the dazzling sun shined down on the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a majestic figure glided through the Entrance Hall, her trusted companion by her side. Once the Krigers were in place, Remilia stepped outside, and shielded by Sakuya's white parasol, she glided majestically towards the Lysander.

Remilia had not changed much in the last 150 years, yet she was clearly a different Remilia than the young girl from when her Mansion had been invaded by Orks. The middle-six hundred year old vampire had grown and matured, and in the sky blue dress with white trimmings, an opening for her great pair of wings and the sign of the Inquisition on her right breast, she looked very much like the noble she was.

Remilia and Sakuya walked over to where Arcturus was disembarking, moving between the Kriegers like they were her guard of honour. Sakuya curtsied when they came close and Remilia saluted her superior.

Welcome back, Arcturus.

Drake eyed the vampire warily, his anxiety due to her presence clear as day. However, he followed Corollianus's suit.

Graille, meanwhile, decided to hover around the back of the formation, knowing full well that although Commissars could interfere in IG business, they could never interfere in Inquisition business. Just another benefit to their rank, of course.
